Definitely past sales experience and knowledge of the products are important. In addition, knowledge of local, state and federal laws that apply are a plus.

I got this off a website :)

As far as I know there is no formal qualification in car dealership. However if you think what the job will consist of you will need:

1)Literacy Skills - You would need to be able to read and learn about new cars, fill out forms, help a customer fill out forms if required.

2)Numeracy Skills - If you are going to be selling a product chances are you will be dealing with money, so any employer will want to see that you have confident numeracy skills.

3)People Skills - You will need to be able to talk confidently and persuasive to try and sell a product, you will need to show that you can influence people in a polite manner and be helpful. Show that you can interact with different people.

4)Computer Skills - You might have to work with computers, responding to customer enquires, via email typing up sales reports etc.

5)Valid clean drivers license - If you are going to be working with cars there is a chance you will need to drive one, supervise a customer test driving etc, In order for a company to insure you to do that they will want a good driver.

Best bet is to work hard in school, get as many education qualifications that you can, maybe try to get some job in a customer service role to give you experience.
