A new British film about Charles Darwin has failed to land a distribution deal in the States because his theories on human evolution are too controversial for religious American audiences, according to the film's producer.

Creation follows the British naturalist's 'struggle between faith and reason' as he wrote his 1859 book, On The Origin Of The Species.

The film, directed by Jon Amielm was chosen to open the Toronto Film Festival and has now been sold to almost every territory in the world.

But US distributors have turned down the film that could cause uproar in a country that, on the whole, dismisses scientific theories of the way we evolved.

Christian film review website Movieguide.org described Darwin as 'a racist, a bigot and a 1800s naturalist whose legacy is mass murder.'

The site also stated that his 'half-baked theory' influenced Adolf Hitler and led to 'atrocities, crimes against humanity, cloning and generic engineering.'

Jeremy Thomas, the Oscar-winning producer of Creation, said he was astonished that such attitudes exist 150 years after On The Origin of Species was published.

'That's what we're up against. In 2009. It's amazing,' he said.

'The film has no distributor in America. It has got a deal everywhere else in the world but in the US, and it's because of what the film is about. People have been saying this is the best film they've seen all year, yet nobody in the US has picked it up.

'It is unbelievable to us that this is still a really hot potato in America. There's still a great belief that He made the world in six days.

'It's quite difficult for we in the UK to imagine religion in America. We live in a country which is no longer so religious. But in the US, outside of New York and LA, religion rules.

I'm furious and humiliated by this. One, because people are actually dumb enough to be angry about this movie and Two, because The United States isn't as religious as Europeans make it out to be (from my experiance) and I think the movie stands a chance of doing well here. Also, as a chicagoan, I'm a little insulted by that New York and L.A. comment.

Wow, well done America, showing off your finest example of logic there. :P

Seriously though that's insane, it looks like it'll be a good film, its got Paul Bettany in it and all...oh well, according to these media types America isn't ready for the Theory of Evolution, which was written 150 years ago.

Hmmm.

Please remember though. When these movies don't get made it isn't America saying so. It's these cowardice production companies insulting our intelligence. About 20% of America is Atheist/Agnostic now and the vast majority of Christians in this country and others tend to be perfectly reasonable people. I honestly don't think we would have to big a problem with this movie other than a few marching retards who love to hear there own voice.

I'm completely against the evolution theory but I would have no problem with the release of this movie. There are endless amounts of things in the media which totally go against the bible today, why should this be any different.

We're not all nutjobs, by the way.

Wow is this serious?

Because...
We have this thing.
It's called freedom of religion.
and separation of church and state.
There's plenty of things that are contriversial towards religion.
And evolution is tought in schools, because it's a scientific theory, religion isn't.

Wow we fucking suck.

I like Charles Darwin! And believe in evolution and all that! I'm not even religious!

The irony of it though is that I go to a Catholic school...

Hi, you might remember me from other such cultural failures like Proposition 8 and that 2012 nonsense.

^^^What about Religulous, That movie was literally a slap in the face to Religion and it did fantastic on a pretty wide release for a documentary. This Carles Darwin film wouldnt need a big, wide release. They could simply just release it to the sections of America it would do well in (New York, L.A., Chicago, etc.: ) and if people start ranting and raving about it, Fantastic, it's getting talked about. That creates attention and makes people want to see it. And if nothing else, atleast it would spark a serious conversation about the subject among Americans.
