This much is evident. Welcome to Ramblings of the Wise. Essentially, the Mayans suffered the same fate as native americans here in Canada and the USA. Only, they were conquered by the spanish and possibly a few others (it slips my mind). They are still around today, though only as a minority in their countries around Central America. Think south of Mexico but not quite down to Colombia.
So, youre not perfect either? Huh

I'd like to know what the hell the mayans were right about before? Seeing as they've gotten everything else right - whats everything else?
I've also been very curious about this 2012 stuff and a lot of people seem to think that the calendar doesn't mean "end of the world" but end of this stage of our evolution. That we're about to enter a "golden age" of peace and everything.
Another theory is planet X/nibiru going through our solar system, messing earth up and causing a catastrophe. Nibiru apparently has done this before and it has been historically recorded from ancient humans.
And a newer theory has something to do with the sun. I don't know much about it but there is apparently strange activity with the sun.
I persoanlly don't believe it, Im just curious as to what it's all about. That sort of stuff interests me, paranormal and stuff :P

I believe I've posted the link before, I also think you quoted the statement from the website. I believe that we are going to be entering a new age, the fifth cycle, the golden age (whatever you want to call it), I'm going to research about this "planet x". It sounds interesting.

So many people are believing the 2012 end of the world thing. Well my perception of the whole thing is that it the end of a new beginning. Meaning that something extravagant will happen, but even though the Mayan's predicted this catastrophe why didn't we all die when 2000 came along. there has been so many beliefs over a centuries of the end, but is it all true. I guess the question is what do you think will happen in 2012 and is this the last generation?

Nothing is going to happen. There is no scientific evidence of anything coming our way in the foreseeable future. Besides, if I was the Mayans, I would get tired making a calendar that goes on for hundreds of years anyway.
PainUnreal
March 18th, 2010, 07:29 PM
Quite honestly, they've been predicting doomsday for hundreds of years. My parents had the news on a while back and they had some dude on there basically disprove every single possible natural thing that could cause the end of the world in 2012. And the Mayan calendar actually has predictions up to year 4000 I believe, but even if they don't I've always just said "maybe they just ran out of rock" xD. So unless we get in some gigantic nuclear arms war, I highly doubt that the world's gonna end in two years

The concern over the year 2000 is different than the fluff of 2012 because people were legitimately worried over whether "-00" would be outside the parameters of the computer programs, rendering a massive mess. Some people extrapolated this to suggesting the world would end and stuff but that's not what the concern was initially over, however, that's what many caught onto.
For 2012, it's really a silly argument because calenders end annually and there's no ending of the world. The fact that the calender was by an ancient society doesn't justify the concern.
However, I have 2 predictions for 2012:
1) The same stuff will happen as usual only it will be associated to the magical forces an abstract date induces (haven't a clue how that works but anyways). Also, more concern and panic will occur. If someone dies on that date or if there's a car crash, it may be due to the world apparently ending.
2) After 2012, once people settle down, someone else will come about with some nonsense and say the world will end in [insert year] because of [insert gibberish]. Once that day comes and goes, the same thing will happen over and over.
Ryhanna
March 19th, 2010, 04:24 AM
The world wasn't actually meant to end in 2000.
I'm pretty sure it was something like...
Computer people thought that their electronic deviced would cease to work after they rolled over to double zero or something and they had like, antivirus discs (not antivirus...) to stop them from breaking down but they never broke down anyway. People just went over the top with the whole world ending thing
As for 2012...
I don't really think anything will happen.
Remember that this whole theory is based on some intelligent ancient mexicans (who died out by the way, obviously they weren't THAT smart.) and their calendar. I'll believe it when I see it... until then, I'm labelling it as BS.

Well if you are going by the Bible then it says that no one will know the time or the place when the Lord will come again. So if your a Christian then you must not believe this stupid thing. The Mayans could have easily stopped the calender back in 2007, or 1978, or any other time. I think this is just a stupid theory that people have used to explain the fact that we are destroying our own race. Naturally humans will want to make this 2012 thing it's scapegoat, trying to make all these things happening to us a sign of the end of the world. It makes me personally sad when I head people believing it.

It's just the end of a calendar, no biggie. It just means we throw that thought away and buy a new one, yeah, like we did in 2000. Blame the director of 2012 (what was his name?) for staining some myth and turning it into one of his disaster porn movies. I just don't buy it, the idea of ending the world in some way no one knows is just too radical. The myth didn't tell us that the world's gonna end. However, it does give us a clue of great change for humanity, a new age, a new beginning, etc. I predict that on December 21 2012 we will colonize the moon, eat some food, watch some TV, wait for the quake, disappoint ourselves, and uh party? yeaah, good times, good times.

i think its stupid, they say the world is going to end based on a calendar. perhaps the people who made this calendar stopped at december 21, 2012 simply because it was pointless to look that far into the future.

Like I said before, "With the way things are going today, we will be lucky if we make it to mid 2011"....rotf...
but seriously, who really who knows when the world will end, we can't predict that. I think society will eventually crumble and collapse, we already see a lot of resource scarcity, but that could take 20 or 100 years.
However, I do know our current lifestyle is not sustainable (especially economically if your in the US) so something here will change, and as much as people claim that they want change, when it happens everyone will be complaining.

No, no sane person thought that 2000 was the end.
Some rouge politician who knew little to nothing about computers, and how computers work thought that computers wouldn't be able to handle going from 1999 to 2000 in it's calendar, while every computer expert said otherwise, but they were silenced.
It was really a mass panic over nothing.

The Mayan Calendar doesnt say the world is going to go bye-bye, 2012 is as far as the mayans could count in terms of years. The only thing that will happen in 2012 is that this Mayan calendar will finish and a new one will begin for the mayans the start of a new era. The whole world ending in 2012 is just people over reacting to what the mayans said, so there is nothing to worry about.
The world was supposed to end in 2000 when the new millenium came in and it didnt. The world was supposed to end on the 6th of June 2006, apparantly the devil was supposed to arise because of the 3 number 666 and it didnt happen, so the chances of the world ending in 2012 are null and void.
Also the world is predicted to be ending in 2036 because a mega mega astroid is ament to be crashing down on us, that will wipe out all life forms, but if you ask me thats aload of shit.
The world was supposed to end in 2008 when the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) was turned on, it was supposed to create a black hole and the earth would be sucked into it and it got turned on and nothing happened, just a load of hype, even Steven Hawkins said it wouldnt happen and he is the smartest man alive.

Ok this is how I see it. The myans existed a very long time ago, perhaps the reason their calendar ended is simply because they didn't care what was going to happen that far in advance. If I was making a calendar to predict events in the future I would reach a point where I too decided there was no point anymore because I was already so far ahead. Did you really expect them to make a calendar that went on and on and on. They chose to stop their, doesn't mean time does too!

I believe that reality is just the dream of some little boy/girl, and 2012 is when that little boy or girl awakens, eradicating all of reality...
Lol, not really.
But I do believe that something will happen on 2012. The Mayans were amazing astronomers and mathematicians, and it is said that 12/21/2012 is when the planets align in a way that hasn't happened for over a thousand years. In fact, some theorists speculate that this alignment will have an adverse effect on the Earth's magnetic fields. Some say it's when a giant meteor will hit the Earth. Or perhaps it truly is God(Allah/Shiva/other gods/who knows?)'s will. I believe that the planets aligning will have some affect on the Earth, but, I guess we have to wait.
Steven Hawkins said it wouldnt happen and he is the smartest man alive.
So just because a really smart person says it won't happen, means that it won't? If he suddenly said that all cows would turn into zombies, and that we should kill 'em all, would you be the first to kill one? (Lol, bad example)
Ok this is how I see it. The myaans existed a very long time ago, perhaps the reason their calendar ended is simply because they didn't care what was going to happen that far in advance. If I was making a calendar to predict events in the future I would reach a point where I too decided there was no point anymore because I was already so far ahead. Did you really expect them to make a calendar that went on and on and on. They chose to stop their, doesn't mean time does too!
The Mayans were probably the greatest astronomers, mathematicians and much more. They've predicted so many things that have come true in both their time, and our time. They, using methods unknown to us, even predicted their own demise! For them to suddenly get lazy would be an utter disgrace.
How can anyone, anyone, say that nothing will happen? I mean sure, it's most likely that nothing will happen! But why should you believe that?
The next time someone says "That's stupid," or "That's BS," or anything of the sorts, I ask you to explain yourself. Why is it stupid? Why is it BS? Show to me the hard evidence that proves you right.
---
Yeah, I know, I'm probably making too big a deal about this, but I don't care! =P

The irony is that this follows your argument. You asserted that the Mayans were brilliant and so they're correct that something awful will happen, the planets will align and so forth. However, as you have just said, just because they were very intelligent people, their claims are not certain to be correct. The Mayan calender ends at that particular date but the reason for it ending is unknown, which is where the media jumped in and assumed that since the calender ends, it means death for all. People began theorizing this is true but have no basis for their theories.
How can anyone, anyone, say that nothing will happen? I mean sure, it's most likely that nothing will happen! But why should you believe that?
So we should believe something will happen for what reason? Something is better than nothing? Believing nothing bad will happen is boring?
To answer why I believe nothing will happen, quite simply, there's no evidence to suggest the world will end. The Mayan calender ends but the reason for it ending is unspecified. Perhaps the planets will align and perhaps something bad will happen on Earth but to say the world will end for that reason is just the same as saying an angry alien race will come and blast away our planet on that day or a wormhole will form on that day, sucking Earth into it and bringing us elsewhere. The idea that something negatively affect the Earth due to supernatural forces on that day is altogether an unfounded assumption.

yeah i think 2012 is somewhat of a scam put out by all the recent End of the World Movies (THe Day the Earth stood still, 2012) that is giving people the idea that just because the Mayans stopped recording time, it HAS to mean something bad.
Maybe they stopped because the Spanish came and they couldn't continue counting because they were slaughtered and no one knew how to record the time anymore since all the people with that knowledge were killed.

A Dunno... I really don't think the world will just end.. They say it will be an asteroid or summin, but if it was to happen, people will have it blown into piesces and then we will all be fine.. Just because some stuupid calendar says summin doesn't always mean bad.. It might mean GOOD!! ;)

who the hell is throwing around the idea that the mayans were super-geniuses that were right about everything so when they decide to stop writing days into the calendar that's already pretty far ahead the world will end for some reason
because that is just silly goosery

I don’t think it will end in 2012. If you believe in the Christian view of creationism then you probably believe that no man knows the time of the end. If you believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution then you probably believe that cataclysmic events have happened many times before. It may have destroyed most life but the world did not end.

People have been predicting the end of time since the beginning of time!!
Of course its not going to end. Just because the people that wrote the calendar say its going to end, doesnt mean it is going to end.
It will be a bright and sunny day and nothing will happen.

They may be right about the end to world as we know it today, a start of a new one in our life time. The world will still be here we'll still be alive but there will be severe changes of what we know. But no i dont think the world is going to be blown to bits and people dead

That's an opinion, he should be free to state his if you can state yours. Don't get so pissy about other people believing things you don't. I'm certainly not shoving it down your throat, why do you try to shove your opinion down ours? Live and let live.
Anyway, the Mayan empire was powerful, true. It is also true that they were intelligent. But I don't think it will all end there. Nobody knows when it'll all go, we just go about our daily business. It's the same way with death, you don't expect it to come, you don't know when you'll get in an accident or get shot. You just live and you die, cause and effect.

I can't say or speculate whether the worl will end on December 21, 2012.
Sure, we have been fearing the predictions that the Mayans have predicted will arise.
It was predicted that the world was supposed to end in the beginning of the new millenium, 2000. It was predicted that the world was supposed to end on June 6, 2006. It didn't. Twice. I know somebody stated this before, but when you view it at a general perspective, you sort of get the feeling that maybe these dates are really, just numbers.
I don't know whether or not the world will end in 2012, but what I can say is that we really can't say for sure. Maybe, the minute midnight strikes on that day, we will all be gone. Maybe, the minute midnight strikes on that day, and the next minute will pass. Then the next, and soon enough the day will have already ended.
They couldn't have possibly decided that on that specific day the world should end. It's pretty crazy. Who knows? Maybe it's not.
I'm not really going to stress out or fuck my mind with that permeating thought. We'll all know when the day comes.

They were better at different things. Perhaps they didn't have gunpowder, but they were skilled with architecture and, of course, their calendar. The path of the sun, the seasons the patterns in nature, etc. And by the way, it's were, not where. Where refers to location.

Not really. They knew more about the solar system than the Europeans could wish. Sure, they sacrificed people to their gods, but it doesn't make them dumb.

Stars don't explode in 2 years. ._.
The sun has an estimated 5billion years of life left....
And when the sun goes, we won't suffocate on CO2, it will go supernova and swallow Earth as a whole. You'd die of radiation far before suffocation.

Although, based on all that^^, you already get the idea..I'd like to put my two cents in. The Myans didn't say "the world would end"..more like, they thought of it as a new beginning..I recall, last summer, some Ancient tribe said a we'd experiance a total eclipse in July of 2009..but hey, we're all still here!

and even if it does, i dont see why everyone's moaning about it. everyone and everything will be gone, so no one will be missing anything.
