Hmmm...
depends on what you're psychological viewpoint is, I suppose.
A lot of the times, it is biological.
However, if it was encouraged by previous behavior in life, then it could've been formed by your own mind.
But it certainly isn't "made up".

My personal view - it IS a recognised condition, but can be brought on deliberately/exaggerated by the individual.

Sometimes it has to do with lack of a certain chemical in your brain. Other times it is just people thinking they have it worse than what they really do or things that've happened in the past as said above.

Depression is more than often commonly mistaken for an actual psychological condition when in fact it's most likely down to hormonal factors experienced in adolescence.

When people claim it's made up, I tend to think a lot of individuals "experiencing" depression are exaggerating quite a bit when it's not particularly severe, some just thrive in delibrately overemphasizing. Miserable and upset moods will come rather frequent put the individual can easily blow them out of proportion possibly for attention, sympathy and care they might happen to think they lack.

In genuine cases, depression can be hereditory or can be encouraged or caused by previous traumatic or troubled encounters the individual has endured.

Define: made-up? As in, it doesn't exist? No, it exists. As in, it can be exaggerated and manipulated by people, yes.

He said that it wasnt real.

In some people, sure.. Maybe its just a time of sadness. But, that person must not be incredibly educated on the topic considering they must no nothing of neurotransmitters, sertaline, and SSRIs. To say it doesn't exist, period, is a very strong claim. It exists, and is real. Though, It can be mis diagnosed and there are several types of depression so, to say they all at fake is bullshit. Depression, general depression, could be fake for people. That is more like a time of extreme prolonged sadness. Though, Clinical depression is a medical condition of the lack of endorphines/neurotransmitters that are too much to type out right now.

depression is real cant be made out is always a chemical thing every time has something to do with chemical for example the chemical in the brain call serotonin is low but not all people with depression need meds but in anyway can't be made out is very difficult that someone can exagerate i think we may think that the person exaggerating because we believe that what happened is not so bad for example if the pet of a friend died and he get depressed we may think he is exaggerating but we never should judge the pain of others.i am a person who last year has depression and believe this is real can happen for a trauma, chemical problems in the brain, difficult events.

here is a link that talk about depression why happen and what to do: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/depression/page2_em.htm
