Do you think schools have the right to ban highlights?

In our stupid pointless school rules it says hair highlights are banned apart from the plain blonde ones. But it comes under uniform rules and i don't see how they have the right to ban something on your own personal body. Ok so piercings, fair enough, they can be dangerous when the corridors are crowded or a similar situation but HAIR COLOURING???

Soooo, can anyone think of a way to bypass this stupid pointless rule? I've already been told to get rid of mine :(

It was green but it did know harm lol.

It just looks messy (in some people's opinions)

In my school the boys have regulations as to how long their hair has to be :S and what colour tights girls are allowed to wear.

It all depends on the school, but its just a view of trying to homogenise the pupils and make the school look smarter.

It's the school's decision, take on the PTA or head if you have an issue with it.

Schools want to present themselves as looking nice and so they don't want people running all around with pink hair, purple hair, blue hair, etc... . It gives the school a bad image. Something such as blond highlights are somewhat common and they don't tarnish the school's image because blond highlights are accepted by society more than green hair is. Also, the blond highlight rule may be in place in case some students, such as yourself, wish to dye their hair or get highlights. It provides some freedom but not enough to tarnish the school's image and reputation.

I can see the reason they ban highlights, they want their students to look nice and clean and respectable. However, I agree that it isn't really fair, but I don't think there is anything you can do about it. You can try a petition, but there's a good chance they still won't listen.

At my school, they don't care what we do with our hair or even what we wear for the most part. We have a very relaxed dress code at our high school. Our middle school is much stricter.

someone had red on their fringe for comic relief and they were taken out of lessons
i dont think anything should be banned unless it stops learning
a colour in hair wont stop you from learning and it doesnt cause any hazards so i thinnkthey should jsut leave it alone

My school is, like, really strict.
Having hair colourings like you mentioned would mean you would be given detention and sent home.
There are also rules on how long guys' hair can be, types of earrings girls can wear (plain silver studs only), the opacity of girls tights, colour of tights, absolutely no make up or nail polish etc before 6th form, skirt length, having your shirt not tucked in = instant blue slip (part of this punishment system, 3 blue slips = hour after school detention), colour of scarves and gloves in the winter... you get the idea.
It's mainly because my school is entirely obsessed about reputation, which is most likely the same reason for your school banning highlights, its all about the image the school want to portray, blah blah blah :)

unless you take it up with the head, there isnt anything you can do.

It's still likely to be a losing battle even if you do take it up with the head-honcho because a) the other students are able to comply to the rules, b) when you became a student, you agreed to follow their policies and rules and c) they don't want to have something so drastic that can affect their reputation. You can try taking it up with the head-honcho but don't expect to come out winning.
