I think they look awsome to a point

I love them and planning on starting again when I'm 16. I had my ears gauged to 4 and 6 (one was behind xP) but my mom finds it disgusting and made me take them out :(
and gauging your ears is when you stretch your ear lobes to make the holes bigger

I have 6g gauges just big enough to fit a cig in. I love them but most girls Ive dated do not.

I agree, it does look really stupid when you have to take them out (i.e. for work) and you have gaping holes. However, when they're in, they're super sick looking. :)
I'd personally probably only go up to an 8 or 6 at the most.

I pretty much agree with that. Once you get to 0g or 00g it's pushing it for most people, and after about 1" it rarely looks attractive. Actually, I've never seen someone with plugs that big and actually thought it looked cool.

Ideally, gauges are big enough to be there but small enough to be tasteful. Taste is relative, I know, haha, but for me it also sort of depends on your general style. It's hard to describe what I consider to be a good "style" to go with gauges and what I would consider to be a bad one, so I guess I won't attempt it haha.

I do want them myself, I'm planning to stretch to 6g and then decide if I want to go up to 4g or not. 4g is probably the biggest I would go, personally. After that it can be very hard to get them to close up without minor surgical intervention, and I don't want to deal with that. Also, after college I plan to teach high school history until I can hopefully get a job teaching anthropology at the college level. Even though people are getting more and more accepting of body mods, teachers have to abide by a stricter dress code than the students and I'd want something that could be reversible if wearing flesh-colored retainers wasn't enough to please a future employer.
