Have you tried updating your drivers? Use Windows Update Optional Downloads to find them if you haven't.

Seems simple, but is it firmly plugged into the computer? Maybe the wire is frayed. And just because its only 5 months old doesn't mean there aren't any new drivers. Also there could be a problem with your sound card.

Oh ok. Did you try blowing any dust out of it, maybe some got clogged in there.

If you can, take the squidgy thing off and give it a wash.
