STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. --

Police say a 61-year-old man annoyed with a crying 2-year-old girl at a Wal-Mart slapped the toddler in the face several times.

Roger Stephens of Stone Mountain has been charged with felony cruelty to children and is being held without bond.

Authorities say the girl and her mother were shopping Monday when the toddler began crying. The police report says Stephens, a stranger, approached the mother and said, "If you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you."

Authorities say Stephens then grabbed the 2-year-old and slapped her at least four times.

The child began screaming and Stephens was arrested. Police say an examination showed the girl's face was slightly red.

Stephens was not represented by an attorney at his court hearing. A call to his home was unanswered Wednesday.

It's not very nice, but how did this make the news? So a man slapped a kid, happens all the time.

I agree with Jon, its like reading Jordans breasts have been made smaller or something, its just not news.

But meh, maybe he shouldn't of done it, but if the mother can't control the child...

^ did I just read right? Wow, I'll refrain from further commenting.

What an idiot of a man, and what the fuck was the mother doing???
If a man approaches me saying he's going to shut my baby up, I don't let near the baby.
Supposedly this man pick the baby up and slapped him 4 times, What exactly was the mother doing during that whole time??

Idiotic people in this world anger me.

I didn't say it was right to slap the child, he must be a bit strange up stairs.

If the man told the mother to stop the child crying what did the mother do? I was just wandering...

If he did that to my kid
He'd be out cold and bleeding all over the floor by the time the cops showed up

The fact that he would even go NEAR my child would result in me going in defense.
Absolutely NOBODY touches my child.

But I'm thinking the same as Paula.

Wtf was the mom doing?

First things I fucking hate it when someone brings crying children into public places, especially stores. Leave the baby at home it will not help you pick out anything.

As others said were are the parents, I mean your kid is screaming in a store at least try to keep it quiet by comforting it or going outside. The man should not have hit it, i would have said "shut your child up please" not slap it 4 times.

Children cry. I cried, you cried, everyone has cried. It's normal. Kids have no rational thoughts, so sometimes they cry for no reason. Must we keep all children at home until about age 7 or 8 until they're allowed to be in public?

The man obviously had anger issues and an off day. I don't have the heart to yell at a 2 year old child for crying. It'll only make it worse; the solution is to ignore it or move somewhere else.

Hitting a child, especially one that's not yours is inexcusable.

Or you could very well walk out the door, as it is a public place.
and last time I check babies are not "dogs" to be left at home. :)

Exactly.
Comazotz is right.

And even telling someone to shut their two year old up is disrespectful and trashy.

Kids cry.
Deal with it.

Now if the child was like 10, and throwing a tantrum, I would politely ask the mother to take him/her outside or to the restroom to calm them down.

Or what Paula said.

And I agree with what she has said about your "leaving them at home" statement, tripolar.

No they don't have to stay home but i mean when people bring very young children everywhere and they cry. Don't bring babies to libraries and school plays but they are there anyway. What is the purpose of taking a baby into a wal-mart, I'm not saying children can't be in public its just that there are times when babies do not need to be in all public places.

But I don't think it's necessary to just leave them at home, either.
