I'd like to ask someone out.

The only problem is that she's the sister-in-law of one of my friends. No blood relation.

One of my friends suggested putting him before the fait accompli, another told me to speak to my friend first, my idea is asking her first and if she says yes, tell my friend before going along with it.

I'm confused.

Help?

You could ask your friend about it, and depending on your situation you may or may not wish to do so. But in all honesty, a good friend wouldn't mind, and shouuld have the utmost respect for any decisions you make concerning your relationships with other people.

Asking her first, as you said, is probably the best way to go. If she says yes then go ahead and tell your friend, if she says no then you've not lost anything either.
And of course, with all such things, you never know till you ask, so go for it!
