No. This is not about the movie.
If you're wondering how this project started, it was found by a hypnotherapist on someone’s blog and she recommended it to her self harming patients, it's gradually made it's way onto the internet and some communities.
The Butterfly Effect is something that helped me quit cutting and I think might find a place here at Virtual Teen to help others that have a true drive to stop harming themselves. It's a way of having support, right there on your skin.
The idea is simple. The self-harmer simply draws a butterfly on their place(s) of self-harm and, if the butterfly fades without them self-harming it means it has lived and flown away, giving them a sense of achievement. Whereas if they do self-harm with the butterfly there; they will have to wash it off. If that does happen, they can start again by drawing a new one on.
The idea has also been adapted into the butterfly stages- drawing first a caterpillar, cocoon and then butterfly. Temporary butterfly tattoos are also acceptable if you don't feel comfortable drawing one, or if you want a change from all the pen ink.

If you feel like it you can even post a picture of the caterpillar/cocoon/butterfly you're going to draw.
