A 16-year-old girl who hit a tree and died while skiing down a black run in NSW's ski fields has been described as "an experienced skier" and "a delightful girl".

Amelia McGuiness, from Hunters Hill in Sydney's north, was skiing in the Blue Cow area of Perisher ski resort "at speed" and wearing a helmet when she lost control and hit a gum tree about 1pm (AEST) on Thursday, police said.

The Year 11 student at Barker College in Hornsby was attending the NSW State Snowsports Championships with classmates, but wasn't competing at the time of the accident.

She is the second teenage girl in a month to hit a tree and die while skiing at a NSW resort.

Another 16-year-old was killed when she struck a tree while skiing nearby Thredbo resort on August 1.

Barker College principal Dr Roderic Kefford said the school was mourning Amelia's death.

"She was a very determined young lady, a very talented sportsperson, very active in the school's co-curriculum program," Dr Kefford told ABC Radio on Friday.

"Ironically enough, a very experienced skier, just a delightful girl.

"We're feeling her loss very keenly."

He said she was free-skiing at the time of the crash, and students and staff at Perisher were now receiving support from the school.

"The thoughts and prayers of the Barker community are with her family and friends," he said in a statement on the school's website.

Police said although she was wearing a helmet, Amelia appeared to have been killed instantly.

"Police have been told that whilst skiing down a slope at speed, the girl appears to have lost control and struck a gum tree," NSW police said in a statement.

Mourners expressed their grief with entries placed on online chat rooms.

"The girl that died was my friend," one person wrote.

"She won gold at a skiing competition recently down at Falls Creek and I have no idea how this could happen."

"I'm going down to the snow this weekend and am hoping to find where the accident occurred."

Another mourner wrote: "She was well loved, well respected and will be sadly missed by everyone. A tragic waste of a young life. Rest in peace girl. We loved you in life and we will love you still in death. You will remain in our hearts forever."

A memorial service for Amelia is expected to be held at the school's chapel on Friday morning.

Police say a report into the girl's death will be prepared for the NSW Coroner.
