Have we reached a stage were there are enough ads to cause serious mental harm?

my sister is a phycolgist(god i hope i spelled it right) and she gets cases of people who say they want this or that and they cant afford it but they saw the ad on tv and they REALLY want it.

also on tv i have noticed over the past couple of years the breaks have gone from about 2min to 4 to 4.5 minutes.

have we reached a stage were we should say as a general public say enough is enough and stop the relentless flow of ads.

(this is from an aussie so id like to see the americans and the europeans level of ads as well).

*Psychologist* :):P

And yes ads are getting way too long, it takes half an hour to show a 20 minute TV show due to the ads. 30 seconds per ad, and maybe 4-5 ads per TV show. I wish we got BBC here :D It is wrong though.

God bless the BBC. Even though they suck ass.

Tbh, advertising is actually dying, would you believe it. Things like the internet and special boxes like sky's plus box, many people just skip them so products don't get advertised.

Companies are aiming for the internet now, as its a bigger market than tv, plus, especially in the UK where our channels are struggling.
Adverts are annoying, but there supposed to be.

I would recomend watching Charlie Brookers special episode of 'Screenwipe' about adverts, apart from being fucking hilarious it gives you an insight. :)

Since the recession, some UK channels haven't been getting as much money from advertising, so there are now less ads than say two years ago. For example, ITV (Granada) and Channel 4 skip adverts at times when not as many viewers are watching.

It's also really annoying watching American programs on UK channels. For example, Ugly Betty is stopped for adverts at strange points, as our timings are different.

To say ad's cause mental harm is frankly ridiculous. We are constantly being surrounded by them and this is not just a recent thing, we have been surrounded by ad's for the last 100 years. It's like saying your friend talking to you would cause you mental harm. That's what ad's are. People talking to you via many different ways. You have the choice to listen to what message is being conveyed or ignore them. Simple.

What makes you think it's any better in Australia?

Ads suck. Just further motivation for me to watch all my shit online.

To be honest, if ads come on, I'll flick over. There's always something else on rather than watching womans conditioners and the latest offers at a supermarket.

I don't understand how listening or watching ads would affect your mental health in any way. Unless you're watching an Oxi-Clean commercial and start getting depressed that Billy Mays is dead.

They don't cause mental harm just make you want to buy crap that you don't need half the time but they are still annoying, and why is it most channels go to adverts at the same time... there is no escape !

Am I the only one who finds them amazing? Companies each year will spend billions and billions on these, but has an ad ever made you jump up and say "Shit I need to buy that!" They are so effective and the beauty is no one realises how much so.

All I can say is thank god for Sky+. I record almost everything and watch it at a later time so i can skip ads. It's also good for skipping rubbish parts in x factor :)

Ads suck they are so annoying, especially on the radio.

But ad's are bot going anywhere with the huge amounts of money television stations make from the ad's the ads will stay. During the superbowl it costs millions for a 60 sec ad, and the station will not turn that down because people hate ads.

And they don't harm minds, yeah they make people mad but don't do harm.
