Fathima Rifqa Bary is a 17-year-old convert to Christianity. That in itself is not remarkable. The reason it is of concern is that she was raised in a devout muslim family. She is currently the center of a case that will determine if she is to be returned to from Florida to her family in Ohio who she claims will be obliged to kill her in an honor killing if she returns. Read about it below and see photos and a video of Rifqa speaking about her ordeal.

Rifqa Bary is 17-years-old and ran away from home after her father found out she had converted to Christianity from the family’s religion of islam. Her devout muslim family is obligated to kill her, as an honor killing, under Sharia law. That is the islamic law practiced by many muslims. In the case of honor killings, the family is required to kill a daughter who has dishonored the family to prove that their religion is more important to them than their child.

Rifga’s family has attempted to get her to return home, putting her in the middle of a battle between her family and the State of Florida while she pleads not only for her independence from her family, but for her life.

She has been referred to as a ‘dead girl walking’ with every expectation that she would be forced to return to Ohio and her family, and certain death at the hands of her father and brothers. As she explains in the video below, its not that the want to kill her, its that they have to kill her as dictated by the practices of their religion.

At this point, she has been given a reprieve. Florida Judge Dan Dawson has ruled that she will stay in foster care in Florida until September 3, 2009 while the case is being decided and while law enforcement continues to investigate. The parents, Mohamed Bary and Aysha Bary have impressed law enforcement in Ohio as loving parents who are only concerned about the well being of their daughter. The family moved to the United States for Sri Lanka in 2000 to get medical treatment for Rifga who had damaged one of her eyes when she fell on a toy. The father is a jeweler and they have stayed here since then.

Honor killings are common among devout muslims. As Rifga explains in the video below, it is required of the family of girls who stray from the behavior expected of them under Sharia Law. If they live in the West and become too Westernized, talk to boys that are not muslim, wear Western clothing, or behave as Westerners do, the father and brothers are obligated to kill them to retain the family’s honor. Fathima Rifqa Bary, the 17-year-old convert, converting to another religion would certainly be a serious infraction, requiring action on the part of the males in the family.

if a family is found guilty of an "honor killing" the entire family should be jailed for life, at different prisons.

If you live in the west you live by OUR standards
you got a problem with that
go the fuck home
we as a society are to fucking tolerant, a trait which is being exploited

I'm so sick of Muslim crap
and I don't care if that's racist

Being tolerant doesn't mean that we have to condone their behavior. I hate it when people confuse the two. You have to realize that different does not equal wrong, but that it doesn't mean you can't disagree with it. In this country, murder is against the law regardless of the reason. When someone threatens to murder another person, and is serious about it, we can't just say, "Well, it's their culture, we have to let it go." They'll still be jailed if they do it, just like anyone else living here, and the judges who send her home should be jailed if they let it happen.

Some cultural differences are more flexible. Murder is not. I can't believe how much debate there is over this, as if there are two perfectly reasonable options. Sending a girl to her death is not a reasonable option. If she IS sent back, and promptly killed, we then have to go easy on the family, right? Since we knew they were going to do it and we gave the daughter back so that they could? It's ridiculous.

Tolerance, relativism, whatever you choose to call it, does NOT mean that everything is acceptable. Get that straight, people. I'm not racist, in fact I'm an anthropology major; Culture is my passion, and I love learning about ones different than my own. I understand cultural relativism, and I always practice it. I can see why honor killings are performed, from the perspective of the family involved, but I don't agree with it and I can't condone letting it happen in my own backyard.

Lol. This girl is a drama queen and is preying on misconceptions of Islam.
I feel sorry for the parents.

One of the main teachings in Islam is that caring for your family is more important than praising Allah.
The father clearly follows this teaching as he has explicitly said that she is free to follow whatever religion she pleases and that he just wants her home.
The chief of the Columbus police missing persons bureau has stated that Mohamed Bary only seems to be concerned about his daughters well being.

I haven't seen anything from the family, have yet to check that out, but obviously if it's a fluke then she goes home.

I just can't imagine sending her back if there's reason to believe she would get hurt.

She's currently staying in Florida while the family are being checked out.

IMO if anyone is looking suspicious in this, it's the girl.

QFT

Saw the video on liveleak a while ago, she seemed spoilt and talking about stupid things like an "asylum where they send people like me because they think we are crazy."

tried a search, couldnt find a single thing on asylums of the sort anywhere, methinks Sapphires is correct in saying she is a drama queen and is praying on misconceptions.

She's also right in saying that Islam teaches you to respect your family an community above all else, and to place your family ahead of EVERYTHING.

Its a very respectful religion, and a huge shame that extremists and terrorists have tainted it so much.
