I couldn't really find the right place for this, so if it'd be better for it to go somewhere else, please move it.

Okay, well as the summer comes to a close and school starts up, we all have things we need to do. My English teacher requires us to read a book of our choosing once every grading period. Well I need a book, there are three requirements. It has to be at least 300 pages and be from an American writer in the last 30 years as well as never have been made into a movie. So I'm looking for something a little lighter, preferably something science fiction/fantasy, but as long as its a story and interesting, it'll be fine. So I'm sick of reading boring books, so instead of just looking for some on my own, why not ask everyone here? So I need your help, tell me your book recommendations, I'd love to hear them all!

"Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher

I love this book so much. It is a story about a high school student named Clay Jensen who just recently came up a set of tape recordings by his class mate Hannah who had recently commited suicide. Each of these tapes explained why Hannah did what she did and also the role Clay played in her suicide. It is a very emotionally overwhelming book, but it will give you a new percpective on life and suicide and who you hurt when leaving life behind.

I'm sure you've considered the Harry Potter series. I loved the storyline and always kept my interest. Recently I've found an author named Harlan Coben whose books are suspenseful, action-packed, and mysterious. They usually deal with murders or disappearances. I recommend his books, although I'm not sure if some of them are long enough.

I can't read the harry potter series because they've been made into movies, that's a criteria braker.

Harlan Coben, I'll remember that name and run it through the list at Barnes and Noble, thanks for the advice!

Hm... my books are non-american writers or too old for the most part,
And the other 75% of my books are in the attic.
Then all of the excellent modern american literature that I have are movies,
How disappointing :(

Here are some though that fit in to the requirements:

Paint It Black - Janet Fitch (Fiction... sort of a downer if you're not prepared for it.)
The Things They Carried - Tim O'Brien (Based off of the Author's Vietnam experience)
Moon Called - Patricia Briggs (Fantasy)
Blood Bound - Patricia Briggs (Fantasy)
Iron Kissed - Patricia Briggs (Fantasy)
Bone Crossed - Patricia Briggs (Fantasy)
Tar Baby - Toni Morrison (Fiction: African-American Literature)
Possible Side Effects - Augusten Burroughs (Autobiography: Humorous)
Magical Thinking - Augusten Burroughs (Autobiography: Humorous)

The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch. Awesome book, really entertaining, and hasn't been made into a film, yet. It will though. It'll be the new Lord of the Rings. Trust me.

You could read American Gods by Neil Gaiman, however Gaiman is english, but an english/american. Dunno. :)

Thanks for the great book thoughts, I think I'll check out Paint it black, I've been in kind of a downer mood recently and I enjoy the fact that it's fiction, but thanks for all the other thoughts.

Sounds good, I'll check it out for sure, thanks!
