View Full Version : Do You Trust the Police?

Seriously do you?
I have been watching videos on this channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/CopsOutofControl) the whole day and I was thoroughly shocked, appauled, and disgusted by the crimes that the cops themselves have committed.
The video below kinda sums up all of the stuff I have seen (mostly)

I want to hear your opinions because I feel that they can't be trusted and when/if I get into public office, this shit will be stopped.
I usually don't give my opinion in the first post but I say distrust these people with everything. They are crooks, thieves, beaters, and lawless. Don't trust them :P

I don't trust a lot of athority to be honest....Docotors(don't even get me started on my opiinions of those over-medicating incompetent idiots), police, teachers, counclers, parents...whatever
If i had to, yes i'd forse myself to "trust" a cop, but always on edge waiting for that deseption.

I try not to Judge too soon. You may as well say that you don't trust people at all. They are people in the end, there are good, and there are bad. I also try to remember nobody really likes a story with a good cop who does his job right, so as a result, most people tend to view cops in a negative way. If a cop does his job well, he isn't noticed, its only when a cop is bad do people actually pay attention.

I've never been a fan of cops
you'll have good ones and bad ones same as any profession
you just never see the good cops on the news
wouldn't sell as well i guess
I've just personally had allot of bad experiences with them
which pisses me off considering i'm usually a very good boy

i personally wouldn't mind becomming a policeman someday,
i dont think i could handle the system they run though,
i've had many bad experiances with the police,
but however i have met some absolutley lovely cops and some of my friends in the force,
i think cody summed it up very well,
you simply cant put them all into the same catagory, some police are good, some arn't, just like any profession.

My father was a police man. And died on duty. In front of me. There are different people. People who just do their job, people who live for the job, and people who abuse the privileges that their job offers. You just have to find the right person.

Yeah, I do trust cops.
I know there are good ones who do their jobs,
And bad ones who overstep their boundaries.
You'll find that in any profession though.
With cops, it's must more noticeable,
Since they're the ones trying to uphold the laws.
Most, if not close to all, of them mean well,
They're just doing their jobs like any other person.

Police officers put their lives on the line daily, keep the peace, and protect us from our fellow citizens. Of course, there are bad cops, but you give me one example of a bad police officer, and I can guarantee that it is multiplied tenfold by the amount of good others do. On balance, you are much more likely to find a good officer than a bad one, and as a person who has no affiliation with the police (family, friend or other), I can say I am personally a bit saddened that someone would take a few videos and condemn an entire group of individuals of treachery.
As teenagers, we many a time have a bad view of the police without taking the time to understand why they do what they do. It is imperative that police officers maintain a steady and suspicious mind, because the minute they let their guard down, someone could die or be injured (vis a vis, we are inconvenienced by their seemingly rude conduct towards us). We discount the fact that officers have families and lives as well, thus they will do what they feel is sufficient to ensure their survival (even with reactions that we deem as "overkill"); issues of stress also should not be understated. Overall, I do trust the police, I understand that not every officer will be as "accommodating" or even as trustworthy as others, but I also understand that most police officers try to be loyal to their oath.
And all of this coming from a black guy in America!

i would trust the police with my life. the countries force was updated about 15 years ago after the troubles. After thoughts that it was too protestant and was biased against the catholic communities.
It has been renamed PSNI (police service northern ireland, service to give a less violent outlook) from the RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary)
every officer has also been fully evaluated to keep even between catholic and protestant numbers.
Weaponary has also been updated to a "only as a last resort" standard. So officers have to radio in to use their firearms.
Also from meeting officers and also training as one, i would have no reason not to trust them

Yes, I trust law enforcement in general. Like Kodie's mentioned, you will get a "bad" cop who plants false evidence or uses excessive force. However, the police are doing the best they can to protect the community and I respect every good thing they do.

I haven't had too many great experiences with the police even when I was not at fault. I watch many shows along the lines of Cops, Disorderly Conduct, etc... and although the police officers are supposed to be trained, many of them seem utterly clueless, even the ones who are not new to the game.
But then again, I've seen some good competent police, although in my experience, there have been more incompetent clueless ones rather than competent ones.
I don't trust them with my life but I do still have some amount of trust and distrust. I realize that there are many good cops, however, I've seen quite a lot of police on TV and such, and had experiences with them in-person and usually they're incompetent.

I think in order to be a cop you have to have a certain personality and understanding.
I think a lot of cops don't know how to effectively communicate. How to try to...talk calmly and get the info they need or the suspect they need before they start spitting out orders like Nazis.....yes, I went there :P
Idk, I think they need to go through more required classes because obviously...60 percent of these guys can't handle it.
And then 75 percent of them are crooked.
In more than just one way. From "protecting a fellow officer" to not stepping in when their partner is beating the shit out of a 14 year old girl to deciding to speed and or turn on their lights to get through cars for no reason.
Idk, I guess my point is, you may THINK they are there to protect you, but as a whole, you can't trust them. Honestly, you can't.
I love how they think you dont know your rights/law and they still go against the law to get what they want. Issue is you have no...reasonable way of getting the cop to listen to the fact that you know your rights/law and that they need to back off.

Yes, I trust police. I have no idea where you got your statistics for how many cops are crooked. I obviously know there are bad cops...there always have been and always will be. Some people are just corrupt and power hungry. In general, however, the majority of police are out to protect people and prevent crime. The small percentage of dirty cops ruin the reputation of the overwhelming majority of good cops and make the general population lose all trust in law enforcement. They are there to protect you! There is no reason you should have to fear the police (unless you break the law, then you deserve everything you get).

Were you recently arrested or something? Honestly, your utter contempt for the police is that of a person who has suffered many offenses from the police, in which case, it can be remotely justified. However, all you have offered us in ways of evidence and sources is a Youtube channel, which is hardly anything of significant weight. Apropos to your position, you have now seen it fit to make up statistics. To be clear, to me, it almost seems as if you are joking, considering the lack of any real evidence to back up your claims, and your several logical fallacies, the most poignant of them being your hasty generalizations.
Research is key, my friend, if you allow one Youtube channel to convince you that an entire group is treacherous and corrupt, then you are closing yourself off and subjugating yourself to propaganda, as opposed to looking at all sides of the spectrum.

Well, I've got nothing against police, even after four arrests and various names I've been called. I was breaking the law, and got what I deserved. But the cops aren't the problem, it's the policymakers. You'll see footage of police beating up protesters, but they're just following orders. They've been desensitized to violence.

No way do I trust them, they have a job to do and that is to prosecute you. I speak from my own personal experience and though its nothing to be proud of.. I went to juvie for a day last year over something stupid. I was seriously more afraid of the guards and/or police in the system. I did not even have that fear from the other kids.
I know that most cops are probably honest and good, but you only get one record and one life so why take the chance. If I am ever questioned by them again I would just say "I don't recall" and that I want to speak to my parents.
Some may disagree, but that's my personal experience and personal interaction with them.

Did you commit a crime? How does getting arrested for committing a crime lead you to not trust the police? I'm not trying to insult you or anything, I'm just really curious about why that is. Their job is to protect people. If you committed a crime, they should have arrested you. Their job is not to prosecute you, that is the prosecutors job. Their job is to investigate a crime.
Now when communicating with cops. It is best to not say anything except for telling them you want your parents and your lawyer. You don't have to tell them anything more, no matter how much they try to get something out of you. You have the 5th amendment to the constitution on your side for this one. You are protected from self-incrimination. Even if you are innocent, the police can and will use anything you say against you in the court of law. They can legally manipulate ANYTHING you say to make it look bad, like I said, even if you are complete innocent. "you have the right to remain silent. if you give up that right, anything you say CAN AND WILL be used against you in the court of law.
This video is good to watch.

Hmm, interseting topic. On the one hand, most cops are reasonable people who are fairly pleasant.
On the other, some are total jerks. They taser people who really don't need to be tasered, tackle people who don't need to be tackled, and some are racist. These cops are the minority, however, and my local force are overall nice people. I have never needed to interact with cops much, though.
Something that dosen't help the crooked cop problem is ticket quotas. Worst invention known to man. Cops should give tickets to people driving dangerously, not two mph over the limit.
Overall I trust my local police, but I'm not so sure about the southern US or big cities.

Yeah, I do. I know some of them go too far but most are just trying to do their job, and I don't understand why so many teenagers hate them. Of course you will find good and bad people everywhere but the important thing is to not let them tar the rest of the force.

No not really, police are always in trouble excessive force, bribes, all kinds of stuff. Everyone remembers the Rodney King beating and the racial profiling towards minorities sometimes. People are afraid to talk to police and sometimes police take interrogations too far. Also when they pull you over for 56 in 55.
I guess it common for police, i mean if i was a cop i would take bribes and gifts and beat people too, until the corruption trials begin and i get removed.
The police are good to when they come during a robbery or find kidnapped people.

Chris,
we're not the best of vt friends, but thats horrible, I'm so sorry. I can't imagine having to cope with and live with that.
This is to some extent a USA question, but from the UK perspective, no, I dont trust the police. There was a recent G7 or somesuch summit when some guy died as a result of totally inappropriate police action. It's got out of hand and the police now believe that they themselves are above the law.

Also when they pull you over for 56 in 55.
You're breaking the law if you go 56 in a 55. They have every right to pull you over it that is the case. There's a speed limit sign up for a reason, if you go over that speed limit, you're taking the risk of getting pulled over, you're risking your life as well as the lives of others, since you are more likely to get in an accident the faster you go. One mile per hour over might be a little much, but then where do you cut it off? Going 60 in a 55? Then why isn't the speed limit 60? People are always going to break the speed limit, no matter how high it is. They are doing so at their own risk (and the risk of anyone who is unfortunate enough to get in an accident with them).
You break the speed limit, you break the law...simple as that.

And cops always speed, especially on highways. You always see state troopers going 70.

Only 70?
Around here, even with the speed limit at 60, the normal flow of traffic is around 75ish.
With cops doing 80+.
My personal favorite is when a cop will flip on his lights just to make it through a red light.
That aside, I trust the police force around here. Mainly, because I know a good portion of them from being in the station a good deal (NOT from doing bad things! :P ).

I have nearly no problems with police. I do hate it when police speed but I rarely ever see it. Here in Wyoming, most police will let you go 10 MPH over the speed limit. And here in Wyoming, not wearing your seat belt is a secondary offence, so you cant be pulled over just for not wearnig your seat belt. That also puts are state #1 for not getting pulled over.

Usually 70 but they do more than that sometimes.
And about traffic lights, not just to do they do the lights all emergency vehicles have a signal and they can change a light to green also.
But when they turn on the lights get though the light and turn them off its annoying.

My first and only run in with the police was at a Football match, or "soccer" if your american. :)
It was the Sheffield derby. which football fans may know is a heated rivalry. I was rushing to the match to avoid any trouble, but stopped walking like everyone else to see what all the shouting was down the road. Then 2 police officers pushed me against a wall and were shouting at me. They were both about 6''4 and 250 pounds. I was 13. 5''8 and around 130 pounds. They hit me on the leg with a bat because I was struggling. Asked if i was a hooligan or knew anything on it ( i didn't)... Then picked me off the wall after it, threw me off.
This incident has left my view of the cops a tad skewed.

He's a really cool guy and has told us lots of things and cops do what's right. They're there to provide and protect, and they have the most stressful job, putting the army aside. As has been said, there is corruption among cops...just like there is in every other organization. Why would police be any different then other organizations?
If there were no cops, the world would be crazy. There would be no punishment for crime. Crime would pollute everywhere. It would be suicide to go outside and unsafe to stay in your home. Police are not only here when an emergency happens...police are proactive...they act as a deterrence of crime, which is why police are necessary. So whether you like police or not, you're fucking dead without them.
