I personally don't need to know but this is an interesting topic. Thanks to the Fear thread for giving me the idea!

In general, what mix of emotions do you think equals awkwardness? I think that most of the time it's embarrassment + guilt + surprise, though there are varying types of awkwardness depending on the situation.

You can feel awkward just for being in the same room as two people who clearly don't get on. So I argue that there isn't an emotional formula for awkwardness.

I think that the emotional formula for awkwardness would depend on yourself and the environment (including other people). But the emotions possible for the formula are endless: fear, surprise, shame, happiness, sadness, anger, etc.... .

Awkwardness is subjective. Take a look at all the possible things that make you uncomfortable, then place yourself in a situation where you're forced to deal with them. That's vague and may not cover everything, but I believe that's the jist of it.

I remember reading somewhere that awkwardness and feeling awkward can occur separately of each other (unlike fear, happiness etc). I believe that they theorised that feeling awkward was a self construed emotional state.

Wow I guess awkwardness is more complicated than I first thought. I thought that the "basic" state of awkwardness, like if you were masturbating and someone came in on you, would be like surprise + humiliation + even guilt, but there are more states of awkwardness than I previously thought.

That would definitely be a state of awkwardness .

But other states can be due to dislike or anger towards someone else. Consider when you're having a fight and making a big scene with your friend or sibling or parents.

You can have awkwardness as a result of happiness, such as when you walk into a room and you're thrown a surprise birthday party. Or, if you're told some good news in a public area and you explode with happiness. You can also have this apply for sadness too.

The above are only some of the many examples.
