Do you agree or dissagree with Prop 8? Do you think it is right for California to say that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized" AFTER they passed a law saying that same sex marriages would also be recognized?
I just want to know some other people's opinions on this. If you do not think that same sex marriage should be recognized, why do you think this way?

Pffft... don't ask me, I think the whole concept of marriage as a legal contract is antiquated and wrong. I think there should be certain legal rights for familes, regardless of marriage, and that marriage itself should be solely a religious or symbolic gesture.

Completely agree with this.
I know I don't live in the US or in California, but I really don't think that it would be right for a state to go back on a law that they have already passed. It's great that same sex marriages became legal, and I think they should stay that way and be that way everywhere.

I don't think it should matter what sexuality the couple are, as long as they love each other.

Ok, this is how I feel, marriage should be between a man and a woman. I am bi and completly support gay rights and understand how gay want to have the same rights as everyone else but same sex marriage is a little wierd to me. Now, I do dissagree with prop-8 because if they approved gay marriage they shouldn't dissaprove it.

As previously stated in this thread, I believe the government should have no hand in marriage at all. I believe that the government should recognize civil unions for everyone, while marriage should be through the religious institutions (or what have you). As such, everyone is equal through law, as everyone (straight or gay) has a domestic partner through a civil union. On that same token, I do not believe the government should interfere with how the religious institutions define marriage, as marriage would be symbolic, but not through the force of law.

I don't think a simple majority vote is legitimate for deciding people's rights.
Churches bathed in tax-free wealth commanded their congregation to vote a certain way and they did. They spread fear and lies. The anti-prop 8 activists didn't have nearly as much money, they didn't have nearly as much of a microphone for influence.
If there was a minimum amount of intelligence required for voting, proposition 8 would not have passed either.

I don't think a simple majority vote is legitimate for deciding people's rights. Here here!
Now... church's tax-free status is another issue entirely...
But I whole-heartedly aggree with the above statement.
People's rights shouldn't be decided by popular vote. Equal rights for all people is a really simple concept to grasp, and it's not something that should be denied because some people don't like it.
EDIT: incidentally, I found this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bja2ttzGOFM)on you tube, and thought I'd share it.
Well, I thought it was funny at least. ;)

I agree! I mean, gay people are denied over 1000 rights because same sex marriage is illegal!

I think Homosexuals can already have a "domestic partnership" California family code 297.5
is where the law is located. I think the Government should stay away from marriage. its a religious thing.
I did support Prop 8, though that was for what I can only describe as "moral" reasons. not religious ones.

You'd have a point, if only that were true. The reality, however, is that many people get completely non-religious marriage ceremonies that are perfectly legitimate from a legal standpoint.

What reason can you possibly have to be against gay marriage if not from religion?
