when i am older i want to join the navy however to do this i have to reach certain levels of fitness, including running. I do excersise quite a bit and running is one of my stronger points but recently i find that even when running a short distance i will get pains in my chest and find it hard to breathe. Its really fustrating me as it means i cant get in with my fitness training. any advise?

If you also find you're getting short of breath, you may have asthma. You can get an inhaler to help it a bit. But this is assuming that once you stop running, the pain goes away until you resume running?
If you want some fitness, then take up karate, taekwondo, etc... . There's lots and lots of cardio and running in that but you may not feel the chest pains. It also improves your flexibility and gives you some readiness on combat.
