View Full Version : Why can't girls build muscle mass like guys can?

More than a bit jealous of guys. How come they're able to work out and become rather strong, but a girl can't do that as well? It's basically impossible for a girl to hit the same level without being on steroids (which i'm not doing)
Apparently i'm "very strong and muscular for a girl" for a girl.... but i honestly feel too weak to be like that. =|
Just wondering.... this question is probably stupid

Not sure if guys can post in this section of the forum but...
I am fairly sure it is to do with hormones, in particular Testosterone, naturally this is higher in guys than girls because our bodies produce more of it. As it is involved in the muscle development, more of it makes it easier to build muscle and more muscle.

Like you said, its hormones. Hormones can have a big effect on controlling muscle growth and testosterone plays a part in allowing the muscles to develop strength when exercised, so its basically the reduced level of testosterone compared to guys.

:disclaimer: only reason i'm putting this in girls p101 is because i'm suspecting hormones. Noob post, but whatever.

Males have much more testosterone than females which is a hormone and gives lots of strength and muscle mass, steroids are essentially artificial testosterone so you get the picture.

plus, by nature, guys have more muscle and girls have more fat because the fat helps with child birth.

This is most likely a thing of nature.
Women need fat so they can have that insulation when they are pregnant and are raising a baby. This keeps the baby warm. This may also provide a source of energy for the mother.
Men are natural hunters and are naturally competitive. They need more muscle to do those.
Masculinity is generally associated with being muscular too, so that's a part of it - it's more common for guys to work out more than girls in general.
Men also have more testosterone than women and therefore can build muscles more easily.

Ah fuck, so i can't regulate my own body temperature, but i can't take the strength either? WTF
lol, yeah the extra bodyfat isn't doing it's job keeping me warm well... n o fair.

it does have to do with hormones. men have more Testosterone then women and that allows to bulk up more easily. women can still bulk up, but female muscles form differently than males, so you won't get huge if your planning on building some muscles. so if you want to bulk up, don't be discouraged because you think your smaller than men, it's natural, you won't get as big as men unless you do take steroids.

A few reasons for this. First, is testosterone which has been stated already. Second, is the metabolism rate, which in women requires a longer amount of time than men to metabolize the fat during exercise. Third, the concentration of myostatin, the higher it is, the less muscle mass you'll be able to get. Fourth, males typically have more strength than females. Females may have stronger legs by nature but men have stronger upper bodies (and possibly also legs) by nature. So essentially males are starting with more muscle and females are starting with more fat than males.
There are more reasons but these are the basic ones I can think of.

Evolution is stupid then...
Right. SO when you've convinced the world that women should be completely equal to men, and when you are out of food and alone in the desert, let me know how equal you are to a man. :)
Or when the military drafts the public, and you get pregnant to avoid going to the frontlines. Let me know how fair life is.
I'm a female, and I personally despise any woman that devalues a man or overvalues a woman to equate to a man. We each have our own capabilities as per our design; as such we should embrace that proper. Not screw others over via deception for superficial gain. Evolution is perfect. You however, are not - mentally.

Yeah basically as said, a combination of; hormones, genetics and evolution.
