okay, i was wondering what kind of articles? because the topic thrown on the table is a bit broad. informative journalism, short stories? what kind of writing are we aiming for?

Just news on VT I guess like behind the scenes stuff, updates, new mods or whatever.

No.
Its supposed to be whatever we want...I would imagine (cant speak for staff anymore)
Thats why she said to submit anything you want so we can see what kind of articles are submitted and the direction the newsletter would take.
It isn't supposed to be just about VT news because that would be boring and the staff would write that.
The part that she asked to write can be ANYTHING. From depression to travel. Whatever you want and then when you submit it I guess they will formulate ideas and pick whatever best fits for that particular issue.

Hmm you'd think in a VT NEWSletter it'd be about VT NEWS really.

Are you illiterate?
This is pretty open-ended as to what you submit, so it's not your typical application.
You can choose to write some sort of VT-Based article (topic of your choosing), you can do a 'Dear Abby' type of thing, you can be a commentator of sorts, a critic, free-lance writer, whatever... anything your heart desires.
That corresponds with what I said:
It isn't supposed to be just about VT news because that would be boring and the staff would write that.:? If you can't understand that, you shouldn't be on this site.

Thats to check writing skills... It's unlikely they'll use the applications in the newsletter and she hasn't said what the newsletter would be about.
Once again, it is a VT Newsletter not a VT News and Story letter.

*Blinks*
Obviously they may not use the applications as part of the newsletter but they are designed to give ideas, gauge writing, and figure out what people are interested in writing for this.
To help you out, you may want to consider what type of article/content you'd like to do for a VT Newsletter and write like you're already in that position.
She told everyone to do that for a reason.
There is a meaning behind every word. Don't take "NEWSletter" so literally.
It doesn't have to be JUST VT News because like I said, thats boring and the members can't write about that anyways.
Use the noggin that you have...or I thought you had.

If it's not gonna be just about news, it shouldn't be called a newsletter. VT Mail yay

Hmm..
VT Magazine would be good. No point calling it a newsletter if it's not just about news. Gives the wrong impression, clearly.

Quite right too. Underage and all that...
Anyway, does it really matter what its called? Or in it? VT isn't a business or company or anything, its a website. I just thought that maybe we shouldn't take it that seriously.
Its only a newletter. (Or magazine type article thing).

Dudes what the fuck are you arguing about.
I'm pretty sure it's news about the site. "VT-Based article". HALLO
Do you really think the Admins want you to write a story about current world news, and then publish it a week late because of the applications?
Even if the submissions are not used in the letter, you could get a lot better quality news on CNN or etc.
Someone said staff members could write news??? I think the admins want spot(s) appointed just for newsletters so they can focus on that. Admins, Gmods, and Mods are too busy to write news. Do we want a half-assed job, or someone who can do this well?
Besides, this idea might not even turn out anyways.

That wasn't the point I was makin, I was saying that if the newsletter were about "Behind the Scenes stuff" that the staff would write it, not regular members.
If this idea even goes through.
Quite right too. Underage and all that...
Joe, regardless of underage, I still wouldn't touch him.

So why couldn't the staff write that bit, then the users could others...?

It's suppose to be about MORE than just VT based news. It could be someone reviewing a book, movie, artist, or concert. It could be a Dear Abby thing like she said. There are numerous possibilities for what you can write about and it's more than just VT stuff.

exactly. That's one thing it could be about, too.
So why couldn't the staff write that bit, then the users could others...?
I'm sure that a newsletter writer would be somewhat of a staff member, and regardless they'd be closer to the Administrators.
They could probably get to hear a little bit of "what's coming up?", and then write about that.
Even so, a good journalist should interview people and I'm sure a good VT Newsletter writer would ask the staff questions about new site features. If they're not doing that, they aren't very creative or just kinda lazy.

Nik, I believe that as the OP you can request this thread gets locked. I've never done it myself and am not quite sure how you do it, you need to contact a mod. John (Mars) would certainly know. Maybe you report your own post, or the last entry (you can report mine, thats fine) and just say 'request lock'

yes, a good call there. the advertisement asks for people to submit any sort of article of their choice to allow the senior staff to evaluate whether we will have enough active and quality writers to justify a newsletter. the articles to be submitted in the application are only sample articles which is why its your choice of topic. the newsletter itself, if it goes ahead, will be vt news based. although in saying that, until it is decided either way whether the newsletter will go ahead, the exact details of what will be included and not included in the newsletter have not yet been decided upon. does this answer your questions about applications? if not post them here and we'll try and answer them if we can.
