Okay, so I have been hearing a lot in the news around my area about how Wisconsin has just passed a law that allows Civil Unions.
What this does is allows gays to do some things that a married couple could do like hosptial visits, insurance..(I think), etc. Basically what it does is provides SOME benefits to gays.
Well, I want to know what you guys think.
If you think that a civil union is "sufficent" then tell us why. If you think that its not then please elaborate.

Not sufficient. Not all states recognize civil unions for such benefits.
In my perspective, there are two types of marriage. Marriage by the government, and marriage by the church. Any church has the right to deny marriage/sponsorship to anyone. Churches are private organizations. However, should the government not provide equality for all, I would consider it unconstitutional.

I second this. To claim marriage is a 100% church-run institution is simply incorrect, many people get non-religious based ceremonies all the time.

I'm quite discusted that people actually think that a civil union is "good enough"
I'm sorry, but everyone who's gay is a person too. This country has equal rights, yet we have laws on in most states that allow places to openly descrimnate against sexuality. If anyone took a minute to think logically, it's unconstitutional.
It would be wrong to force a church to marry gay couples, because it does go against their belifes and as it's a private orgnization (seperation of church & state....) they can. But our government is supposed to provide the same rights for all people. This "We're sorry but you're not as much a human as these people" is bull shit.
(also the parental controls on this computer are homophobic....)

Not to mention some churches these days are actually quite liberal and would have no problem holding gay marriage ceremonies. It shouldn't be illegal to tell let them do so if they choose.

I totally agree. I think that marriage, should be strictly between a church but anyone and everyone in the country can "marry" to get the legal benefits. It isn't the governments place to get in the way of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, and thats what they are doing right now.
I would sue...but that takes time and money. Anyways.
Rarely do I see people that are against gay marriage on this forum but if there is anyone that is, is Civil Unions "good enough/sufficient" for you or are you against this to?

I think Civil Unions are a good start. They offer a lot of benefits that gays lose out on other wise.
I am in total favor of gay marriage. It is not for us to judge and say that two people who are in love and have been together for a long time can be married. All people deserve the same rights of marriage no matter what your sexuality is.

I want marrage. Full package, full rights. I personally think this 'civil union' is a way to make us shut up about wanting equal rights.

We have a few I think, but these people ususally stay out of these debates because there's probably more people who are gay or bi.

Well, this is no fun debate. Can I pretend to be against gay marriage?
Marriage is property of the church. The term itself is sacred. Homosexuals don't deserve it. Period.

Yep, this is when I go
"Why would people want to choose a life of discrimination, less freedoms, and...shame for lack of better words?"

which is why the argument against homosexuality doesn't work too well
one i've had to use a retort to "it's a sin like any other but they're choosing to do it again and again"
which was "well isn't working on sundays a sin you do again and again? Isn't wearing jewerly (for the ladies) a sin that you do again and again?"(i was talking to a person who felt that women shouldn't "adorn themselves with gold"

I don't know why gay people choose to be gay! They just like it in the butt, I guess.

I think it is ok if people are gay, it is their choice, but marrage should be between a man and a women..... it is better that way
well said to the other guy

1. I guess its a bit different in england and
2. My mums gay an i find the only difference in a civil union and a marriage is the name, marriage (to me) is through a religous organization whereas a civil union is the state recognition of marriage if it is unnacceptable as a religous service... Basically i feel the government over here is fine with it tis just the church (meaning all religion) that needs to modernize...saying that actually everyone knows my mum is gay even the reverand and she is still allowed in...probably cuz protestants dont care bout nethin much you just have to be a nice person lolz
