You ever find yourself saying "That's so gay" to mean something is stupid or dumb? Yeah? Well...
At one time, gay used to mean to be happy. Now it means someone who is homosexual.
So every time you say "That's so gay" your insulting someone.
Seriously people, how would you like it if someone said "That's so jock who can't even complete a sentence" or "That's so cheerleader that like tries to act all smart" and even "That's so gamer guy who has more video games then friends.

there words
if you get offended by something that nearly everyone says then your not gonna do to well
its pointless trying to change people its like teaching them a new language you may cover it but its gonna end up slipping out its one of those things that happens
get over it

Its common language in some places and it would be hard for some people to stop saying it.
Personally i used to say it all the time, but after i started to feel different i don't say it much. Also the friend i mess around with whenever i say anything like that he makes a face.
But now I know it can hurt people and i try not to say "thats so gay" but i slip up sometimes.

Sexual orientation isn't an identity - it is just a part of who you are - so I fail to see how "that's so gay" equates to "that's so blonde bimbo" or similar statements.
Also, where is the campaign against the use of the word naff?
Where is the government pouring money into getting people to use a word other than naff?
If using the non-derogatory word gay in a way that labels something as stupid is so horrendously offensive, then why isn't there a team of people out there who want to eradicate the use of the word naff which actually has a derogatory meaning?

someone is really offended by this? You should be more confident in yourself than to be offended by a petty remark like "that's so gay". I don't know anyone else who has said they were offended...it's just slang! Don't take it personally, they aren't saying, "that is stupid, just like gay people." Now that would be offensive.

Yeah but still I mean you can come up with a word that more accuratly describes what has happened. Plus when you say, "oh thats so gay" Unless its refering to some homosexual activities, then it doesnt really make much sense. Like when you get killed in a video game. When you get killed the games characters' sexual prefrences have nothing to do with you being terrible at a game.

So? You also wouldnt say oh thats so happy! Stop trying to worm your way out of this. It just doesnt fit into a sentence like that and really no one should use the term in itself.

When in the context of "he felt so gay" the word gay is synonymous with happy.
When in the context of "this is the gay bar in town" the word gay is synonymous with homosexual.
When in the context of "that's so gay" the word gay is synonymous with stupid.
In and of itself, the word gay is not offensive or derogatory.
These three separate meanings that have developed over the years are not offensive or derogatory.
So, please enlighten me. Why should any of us not use it?
I also pose the question I stated earlier, why are you all bent out of shape over the use of the word gay in this context but not over the use of the word naff which is actually a derogatory term?

Exactly my point.
If you're offended by this term, OceanChallenger, fine, but I'm trying to make a statement, not start a riot.
Check out UrbanDictionary for more examples of this sort of thing. Normal words can take on obscene definitions. The same thing happened here with "gay" only in reverse.

Sorry I haven't a care. I mean honestly, despite your "Prowess of the word Gay" It won't be the shield your looking for. Now given your right and well, you think I'm wrong. Let me tell you why. Its called smugness, you use the word gay in its different sense around someone who is really sensative. Then you got yourself a problem no one gives a crap about the other definetions they know they point your trying to get across.

Its called smugness, you use the word gay in its different sense around someone who is really sensative. Then you got yourself a problem no one gives a crap about the other definetions they know they point your trying to get across. The flexibility of the word gay is important here as it demonstrates that (a) when used in 2 out of the 3 possible contexts it has nothing to do with sexuality and (b) none of the different meanings are offensive or abusive.
Given that and the fact that a persons sexual orientation isn't a persons identity I find it hard to believe that you can still insist that "that's so gay" is offensive to homosexuals.
What do you mean by "Now given your right"?
And what does smugness have to do with using the phrase "that's so gay"? Lol.
Tbh, if someone gets offended by an inoffensive phrase then they need to grow a thicker skin. Using an inoffensive word in an inoffensive context isn't wrong, cruel or abusive.
If someone is using the word gay to insult another then, of course, that is different.

No no, I mean like I concede. I understand that there are certain people who are thin like paper and will take it the wrong way. My feelings for this entire campaign were echoed much more eloquently (http://www.penny-arcade.com/2009/8/17/) than I could have put it just last week by Mr. Jerry Holkins, a webcomic (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/) writer and sci-fi author. The gist of it is simple: the message won't reach your target audience because it fails to understand them (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/8/17/).
On a more specific note, with regard to gamers and internet users in general, I belive John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19/), aptly illistrates that any average individual may not be displaying their regular public venier when using online communications. It is a legitimate idea, if a bit bluntly put, which is more scientifically refered to as: The Impact of Anonymity on Disinhibitive Behavior Through Computer-Mediated Communication (https://www.msu.edu/user/trescami/thesis.htm).

Everyone that says "thats so gay" or "that teacher is such a homo" and then says gay doesn't mean that I'm being mean to gay people.
well...
The "N" word means ignorant but if you walk around saying "that's so nigger", or "that teacher is such a nigger" and then say i meant ignorant not black people, and absolutely no one will find that appropriate at all.

I'm not gay but anything derogatory should not be used towards anyone. The "n" word on it's own is a derogatory word and it retains that regardless of the context in which it is used. I have yet to come across people who think that using the "n" word at all is ok.
However "gay" is not a derogatory word and is not derogatory in the context of "that's so gay", "this is the gay part of town" or "he felt so gay".
That is the huge and inescapable difference.
