A girl's on-air revelation she was raped has seen her mother's morality questioned and the radio hosts lambasted, as authorities investigate the claim.

There's been public outcry over Wednesday's stunt on the Kyle and Jacki O breakfast show on Sydney's 2Day FM which saw a 14-year-old girl strapped to a lie-detector and asked about her sexual history.

When her mother asked if she was sexually active the girl replied: "I've already told you the story about this ... and don't look at me and smile because it's not funny."

After the distressed teen revealed she has been raped as a 12-year-old, radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands responded by saying: "Right, is that the only experience you've had?" before the interview was brought to an end.

Sandilands and Jackie O apologised on air on Thursday, claiming they had not been told the girl had been raped and denying suggestions the interview was a set-up.

Police are investigating the rape claim and officers from the Department of Community Services (DoCS) have met with the family involved, the NSW government says.

"Whether or not they knew the claim of a rape is irrelevant," NSW Community Services Minister Linda Burney said on Thursday of radio hosts Sandilands and Jackie O.

"The fact they had a 14-year-old girl there, asking her about sex, is the focus and the inappropriate action here."

The minister said she did not believe the girl's mother was criminally liable for not having reported the rape claim, despite apparently learning about it months ago.

"But morally there has to be a question asked about whether or not she had that responsibility," Ms Burney said.

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the radio hosts should have considered the welfare of the girl involved.

Sandilands has since said he wished he had chosen his words better in response to the girl's statement but also criticised the media's representation of the incident.

He told the Nine Network's Today show he felt instantly terrible for the girl.

"There was genuine shock," Sandilands said.

Child rights advocacy group Kids Free 2 B Kids have labelled the on-air stunt as child abuse and want a national strategy to prevent child exploitation in the media.

"Dragging a child onto the media stage to be interrogated with a lie detector about her sexuality is a horrific invasion of her rights," the group said in a statement.

"What took place in the radio studio was child abuse and should be acknowledged as such."

The group's call for the radio program to be axed has the support of former Family Court justice Alastair Nicholson, World Vision chief Tim Costello, adolescent psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg and ethicist Clive Hamilton.

Meanwhile, child protection group Braveheart has praised the girl for speaking up about her ordeal.

"Sexual assault is disempowering," group founder Hetty Johnston said in a statement on Thursday.

"But this little Braveheart reached into her 'self' and found potentially, the last shred of 'self' power she possessed and told everyone the truth...

"There are so many issues around this but the bottom line is that this 14-year-old stunned the nation with the truth.

"She broke the silence on sexual assault."

2Day FM suspends Kyle, Jackie O Show
19:05 AEST Sun Aug 2 2009

The Kyle and Jackie O radio show has been suspended indefinitely after last week's lie detector stunt, with host Kyle Sandilands declaring he is unable to go on air.

There have been calls for 2Day FM's Kyle and Jackie O breakfast show to be axed by the station's owners, Austereo, since Wednesday when a 14-year-old girl was strapped to a lie-detector and asked on air about her sexual history.

When her mother asked if she was sexually active the girl replied: "I've already told you the story about this ... and don't look at me and smile because it's not funny."

After the distressed teenagers revealed she has been raped as a 12-year-old, radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands responded by saying: "Right, is that the only experience you've had?" before the interview was brought to an end.

In a statement on Sunday evening, Austereo publicity manager Kate Whitby said: "Kyle Sandilands' management has advised Austereo that he is unable to perform his duties on-air at this time.

"Further, following a great deal of consideration and having consulted Jackie O and all stakeholders, Austereo has formed the view that it is in the interest of all parties, for the Kyle and Jackie O Show to go into recess until we have completed an across-the-networks review of the principals (sic) and protocols of our interaction with our audience. This review commenced last Wednesday, July 29."

There would be no further comment from Austereo, Ms Whitby said.

Sandilands and Jackie O apologised on air on Thursday about the stunt, claiming they had not been told the girl had been raped and denying suggestions the interview was a set-up.

Police are investigating the rape claim and officers from the Department of Community Services (DoCS) have met with the family involved.

wow...I can't believe that, number one the mother didn't report it, and two that she knew about it, and still asked the question on a live broadcast! She should get in trouble as well.

Makes the Ross/Brand shitness look even more pathetic.

The mother has problems, seriously.

i listen to the kyle & jackie o show when i'm getting ready for school in the morning. i didn't hear this live because i had already left for school, but i heard it back later that day. the points i would make is that the mother is very much to blame here, but kyle & jackie o shouldn't have put an underage person on a lie detector test asking about her sex life. but in saying that i think they were genuionly shocked when they heard what happened to the girl. i think the worst thing they have done is be a little unethical, as for the mother, i think she is a total bitch, but escapes all the attention because it was kyle & jackie o. hopefully something happens to the mother for allowing this to happen.

I'm not familiar with this exact show but I'm not understanding why a minor was strapped to a lie-detector while the show was on-air radio. That whole idea is just beyond me. I'm also somewhat unsure as to why the girl would oblige and I'm even more stunned as to why the radio show would allow it. Even if the girl didn't admit to being raped, the idea that you interrogated a minor on-air about her sexual history is just rather odd and it's begging to lead to trouble.

As for the group saying it's a "horrific invasion of her privacy", well I find it hard to believe the girl wouldn't have known in advance. So I don't exactly see it as an invasion when the girl willingly would have come on-air and when her guardian/parent also allowed it. So that bit by the group I see as nonsense.

The radio show's ending question, although not worded in the best of ways probably was the best to come up with on-spot and to wrap up the interview.

But for the mother that's another part where I'm a bit lost on. Nevermind that she knew, just considering the events, she knew her daughter was raped and allowed her daughter to go for a lie-detector test on-air radio about her sexual history. Surely the mother must have considered the possibility that the daughter may tell it but if she didn't consider that, then another question remains: why let your minor daughter undergo that stuff on-air radio? I'm not understanding why any parent would allow that.
