I see at my High School which is rather large, 2000+ students, that outside the cafe there are military recruiters for all the branches, now I support this and personally I hope to join the Navy after High School, but I see students protesting it and trying to get people to sign petitions to get them to leave.

What are ya'll's opinion on military recruitment at hs's?

If the school is a state school (funded by the Government), then the military has every right to recruit there.

If it's a private school, however, it should be up to the board/owner of it.

We get it at our school, I don't mind if they come out and like try and tempt you to join but don't make you sign up then and there.

At my school you can sign the dotted line to start entry into the army at break time twice a year at my school, I don't think thats right really. I'd rather see what the army has to offer then have to go away and think about it then go to a recruitment office.

To be honest with you, people aren't stupid. If they're easily persuaded to join up, then that's their own fault, because people should take initiative and research things themselves before signing anything important like that.

I'm semi-interested in a military career myself, but that's not because of a recruiter persuading me (the only time I was ever persuaded to enlist was when I went to an Air Force base on a school trip), it's because I researched it myself and it's quite appealing. However, if I initially wasn't interested, a recruiter wouldn't change my mind by telling me to sign and glorifying everything, because I'm not blinded by patriotism (no offence) and I know there's more to the military than being some tesosterone-filmed commando with a machine gun and a bulletbelt killing terrorists.

I'm not saying people are stupid if there easily persuaded to sign up, just I reckon people shouldn't be pressurised or expected to sign on the dotted line after having about 15 minutes to think about it.

I reckon it should be, you get given all the information packs then you go away for a night or two to think about it then go to a recruitment office.

They come to my school a couple times during the year, I like it because of one thing. FREE STUFF. they always give out free stuff like, my navy mug, army key chain, Deck of U.S. army cards and the pens and pencils.

I never ever write my name down because they will probably show up in the middle of the night and take me.

Now they one thing i don't like is they call everyone when they go into the senior year and some recruiter called me i'm not calling him back though.

I see nothing wrong with it because many students probably are interested so why not give them an easy chance to go for what they want? As for the ones that don't, grab some free stuff and be happy with your loot. I don't see it as being bad as long as they aren't slamming you to the walls or shoving a gun in your face to make you sign.

For those petitioning it, just ignore the military recruitment or just get some free stuff. It's not hurting you if you just listen but don't sign up if you don't want to sign up. Why take away the opportunity many others would like simply because a few don't like it?

I don't support the military in the school, but i'm also against violence straight up, so whatever. But, they influcence and donations and help my school gets from the national guard is great and if that means I have to put up with their shit, I will do it.

I think its fine.

The military is a valid career option. Its much more than flying to Iraq and getting killed...to put it bluntly.

I think its fine beacuse A. you have to sign up for Selective Service anyways.
B. Its for valid reasons. I mean, the military isnt a bad thing.
C. You dont have to join.

I don't have a problem with it so long as they explain to the kids who sign up what exactly they're getting themselves into. Public schools are government funded, so the government can do as they please with them.

Public schools are government funded, so the government can do as they please with them. Imma go ahead and call bullshit on this one. Public schools are owned BY THE PUBLIC! Not by the government! The government doesn't have the right to do whatever they want in schools, or any other institution just because it's the Peoples' tax money that's paying for them.

Do you think the government has the right to ban anti-american literature from public libraries?

Yea, the army will come in the night and take you against your will, they wait till your out of High School. They arnt the Gestapo you know They sell a job like a product. They come into schools and tell young people that being in the army is an adventure, that shooting an automatic weapon is cool, that driving a tank is like playing a video game and that by serving a few years you'll get money for college to start a real career. All the while they completely and purposefully leave out some rather important, and sometimes chilling facts about signing up.

Stuff like, the pay scales they will show you will always be on the highest end, so what they're showing you isn't what you will be making, but rather, the most you could possibly make! Stuff like, the GI bill doesn't pay for all of your schooling, and depending on certain factors, might pay next to nothing. Stuff like, if you sign up after 18 and subsequently refuse to serve, they have the right (and the inclination) to throw you in prison.

And oh, of course, the big one: unless you have special skills or already have a college degree, if you sign up at this time in history, you WILL be sent to Iraq to fight in the war. They usually downplay that fact. They'll say "there's a chance" you'll be sent, when really, there's NO chance you WON'T.

Do you know of any other employer that recruits and 'motivates' like this?

It's insane.

The military has no business in the high schools of it's country. If the school has a career day set up in the gym or something, by all means set up a booth along side the private corperations and companies, but letting them sign up kids in between lunch periods is just wrong!
