Ok so today, we (The year 9 class) went to this Drug and Alcohol program, to show us the bads of drinking and doing drugs. It wasnt like the people stood up the frount and said "Drinking is bad. Drugs are bad" They made it almost (I say almost so i still sound cool :P ) really cool. They acted out a thing about this girl, her friends, and her brother. it was all based around her getting drunk, and her brother made her friend call a cab, but wouldnt go with her. They left her in the cab, and told the driver where to go.
Then they did like, what the driver would be saying or doing, they did a 'good' driver and a 'bad' driver. By bad i mean... nevermind. Then they got us, (our year 9, and i think it was 2 or 3 other school groups) to act out a part of it our selfs.
My question to you people of Virtual Teen is: Do you think these programs work in stopping young peopel from drinking or doing drugs?
-i think people will forget it as soon as they leave-
also, i saw this cute guy :) he was short and had the cutest emo hair! Lolz.

I think that the more people say "Don't drink/do drugs they are" The more people are tempted to do.
I am a firm believer that people should be educated and left to make up their minds, they should be told of the risks, effects, consequencese etc.
Although I must say its clear you did not just forget about it as you have posted here :P !

I think it's better than going around saying "don't do drugs, don't drink, don't do blah blah blah". That being said, it probably may encourage some to try it out because it may seem somewhat fun or it may not show too many negative consequences. If you were shown many disgusting pictures of people incinerated in their cars due to drunk-driving, then that may have a bigger effect than mere role-playing and sunny smiles.

Thats very true, people think this approach is unethical but I think kids watch 18 movies all the time anyways and have seen worse than some messed up guy with his insides scraped along a mile of motorway, I know I have! This in mind, when people come into schools with their awful Microsoft Powerpoint presentations, kids get bored anyway and don't listen but what child do any of you know that doesn't want to see a picture of someone with half a face?
Think about it.

It may be somewhat unethical but it probably will do the job. Even if the kid doesn't want to see someone with half a face or their intestines on their face, the kid is going to remember that and will remember the purpose of the presentation.
When someone comes in and gives a boring powerpoint slideshow, then that's not going to make many kids remember or try to adhere to the program.
I understand that people may not want to resort to sure gore when it comes to educating people but when the normal slideshows don't work, what's the point of continuing them? Go to the abnormal slideshows and if those work, then use those. So either people take the more ethical route with less effectiveness or they take the more unethical route with more effectiveness.
Although I do agree with you, there are numerous movies and even cartoons depicting violence and people getting torn apart so showing similar images only without actors may shock some students but it's not going to be something they never seen anything remotely similar to.

Well I don't feel like reading the replies
But I think that kind of program is good, kids will drink regardless of what their told.. But stuff like that atleast encourages them to be a little careful & practice some common sense

I feel that education should give all the information about the specific drug, not just the bad things about it. THEN leave it up to them to decide what they want to do with it.
I'll smoke weed, and salvia. I won't do Cocaine, heroin, or any other heavy drugs, I've researched every drug I know about I know the ups and downs of all of them. I know way more about them than I was taught in school.

During the lunch time chatting. (mostly the guys going on about who they will do :/ boys will be boys) I asked them how much they remembered about the day. Most of them said "the chicks from the other schools" XD
