Im 13. My parents have never seen South Park, but im not allowed to watch it anymore because of its rating. South Park is MA, but i don't see a point in that.
Rating a show like that MA doesn't prevent anyone from seeing it. Sure, a four year old shouldn't watch a show like that, but for an eighth grader, it doesn't matter really.
I have heard worse things in school than in South Park. i don't learn anything by watching it. it doesn't teach me bad stuff, because i already know about it.
Eric says, "F**K YOU," but just by seeing that i didn't learn anything. I'm not going to shoot someone just because i saw it on TV.
It bugs me that Family Guy has a lower rating than south park. Family guy is much worse in my opinion than south park. They make racist jokes, and the show is cruel. South Park has sex jokes and swearing, but thats it.
What are your views on this?

Well, some kids can get influenced by the behavior shown in those programmes. Even eighth graders. It depends on the beliefs and mind sets of people.

South Park is way worse (ever seen the "Time to get out" and "Naggers" episodes? Those were really racist), and some kids are easily influenced.
But I still watch it anyways. :P

I think TV ratings are a decent thing to have because it can be a quick and easy way to discern whether or not a kid should or shouldn't watch something. On the other hand, the issue I see is that the ratings don't really portray the true content of the show or movie, that is, something may have a rating of MA and you'd think there'd be some horrible content that younger viewers shouldn't see, perhaps sex or very crude statements, etc... . But in reality, it doesn't for all shows (i.e. South Park).
So while I do think that TV ratings are beneficial, I think that they're not always used appropriately. That all being said, they shouldn't be used as a guide to avoid a certain show but rather just forewarn you that the content you may find unsuitable. It's sort of like a warning, similar to threads on VT. If a thread is labeled as "triggering" and you read it and get triggered, well you were warned ahead of time. That's somewhat what TV ratings should be used as, a warning but not a guide that you should avoid the show because it's rated R or MA or whatever.

You think your parents are bad.....My mom won't let me watch Family Guy; I'm 14, ( I do anyway though :D)
Family Guy isn't as bad as South Park, so I agree with those ratings. But on some TV shows, the ratings are completely wrong. I just woke up so I can't think of any, but there are some.
Video Game ratings are even more stupid though....

I find the t.v. ratings pointless. I've been watching Family Guy since I was in second grade. But, um, South Park is way worse than Family Guy. Let's see, South Park is more violent, they say fuck a lot, they make fun of Jews, and they make fun of a lot of other stuff.

TV ratings are there as the material in them is intended for that age group, so I agree with them. For example take the new film Bruno that has been released, It is an 18 in the UK and anyone who has seen the film will agree that parts of it are not suitable for younger minds.
South park is a great show, it often has very good points in it, take the "Nagger" episode which someone mentioned above, I think that episode discourages racism but this is done in a mature themed way.

family guy is much worse than south park. really. south park kinda makes fun of jews, but
Family guy makes fun of black people, asians, muslims, homosexuals, and everyone. they're kinda mean.
South park does too, but on a lower scale.
SP is tasteless, but i at least get the jokes.

I'll throw something in here.
Production companies and other media companies in America HATE South Park, or they hate the makers. As those two, Trey and Matt, are stand alone and independant, they make fun of who they want. And they do what they want.
So they don't like them at all. I know Family Guy do that too, but as an example:
Comedy Central said to them that they couldn't run a song that they'd done in one episode (i cant remember what), but of course, becuase they loved it, they said "fuck it, lets just keep it in anyway"
And, back on topic please, this is turning into a South Park vs Family guy thread. :)

I believe, like porn 'age verification pages', they mainly exist so people don't get sued.

The ratings are like a waiver that you have to sign so that you or your parents can't sue the company because of the material.

TV ratings are very rigid in structure. Meaning it dosen't matter what the general subject matter is, but what sort of "objectionable content" is contained within the plot.
Like it's the words themselves, not the context that matters.
Oh, and by the way, Robot Chicken FTW!

Exactly. The producers and creators of the show don't care who watches, as long as they make money. The FCC makes the TV ratings so citizens don't sue the FCC for not warning people when an inappropriate show is about to come on.
In my opinion, South Park is much more offensive than Family Guy. This is one of the reasons I enjoy Family Guy more than South Park; they know when to stop jokes.

ZzKingz, I think TV ratings are very appropriate. Some people may not want to watch things that are offensive, or have their kids watch offensive material. Even if you feel you have no need for it, there may be others who do. I also believe that at 13 you should also consider your parents might know a little more than you do about what influences their child/children.

You have a good point, but i know more than my parents about one thing for sure: What goes through my own head. I don't care for THEIR opinion on something thats my business. I can advocate for myself. im responsible enough.
