Well I have one quick question, she's your friend, how good of friends are you? Do you talk to her everyday, I mean are you best friends?
If you are good friends (which I think you probably are after three years), and you want to talk to her about it just make sure you ease into it. Don't come off to strong, try and keep it in casual conversation, whether that be over text, on the phone, in person, whatever. Talk about it, as it really is healthy to do so, just don't get to caught up in pouring your soul out, and still focus on the conversation. Just make sure when the conversation is over you say something like "I hope this doesn't change your opinion of me, I really am still the same person."

Good advice.
It's often really hard admitting you're depressed to your friends but you've made the right decision to talk to her about it. Just keep it casual, and let her know you are still you and you are still friends. Often, they'll really help you. I told a friend of mine that I was cutting myself coz I hated myself so much. He helped me pull through and I've stopped now. Just remember, if she's close to you, she's not going to let you go just because of this. I'm sure she'll understand.
