So last night my sister who is 25, was asked by my mum to watch a show about how kids live with their parents too long. She didnt want to watch the show and an argument insued about how she should respect my mum more.

I told my parents that she didnt have to watch the show.

so i walk off and they start telling how i should respect them.

any advice on how to either avert these arguments or to not escalate them?

Well dont take offense but you should, i can only go by my parents and what i have seen from friends and been told but i think my parents are for the most part pretty fair... and since they are older too i try to realize they know some what more than i do.
I even with them dont look to argue and avoid it if i can but we all know it happens
Since this issue is with you mom and sister you should let them deal with it
Maybe your mom is trying to send her a signal? in that case if you sister doest pick up on it she should have a talk with her
not trying to sound like a know it all here ok
i have what id call fights with mom sometimes and i think its because she wants to be too involved in my life,(but i think ok i live with them!) but deep down i know she cares.
sometimes you just wanna scream and i have done that! LOL

Well... the obvious answer would be 'to keep out of them'. If you're not involved, you don't have to be. You chose to stick up for your sister, and that's admirable, but she's almost twice your age; I don't think she needs the help.
