Well, I would consider myself to be a downbeat person, but not properly depressed. I am also quite morbid and I often find myself thinking about suicide... methods, the feelings, why you'd do it etc.
I thought this was harmless, but I read that this is actually the first step to becoming suicidal and I should get help. Obviously this has me worried so I decided to ask here whether this is true. Is it true, should I be worried?

If you're thinking about suicide, then best getting help for safetys sake. Maybe you're just curious about suicide, but maybe not. I'd get it checked out.

I think about death a lot, because I am really scared of it. Sometimes this train of thought just drifts onto my death. So could I be confusing suicide with just thoughts about mortality?

Possibly if you're afraid of death. Maybe you're just trying to make sense of what would happen if you died, and why? If you're worried that you're going to become suicidal, seek help, if not, then its probably nothing to worry about.

Thanks! I think it is just me making sense of it.
