Okay. So my dad and I were watching one of those police camera programmes, and they set a police dog after a criminal. This brought up the time he was attacked by a dog and he kicked the dog until it let go.

Just suppose he was the criminal, and that was a police dog, could they charge him for assaulting a police officer??

Yes, in the US it is a crime to harm a police. It is a felony just like assaulting a human police officer.

As you are in the UK, I'm not sure how the laws are there. However, in North America I do believe it is a crime because the police dog is like a human police partner. I'm not sure if the sentences are the same as it is for harming a human police officer though, however, I'd imagine it'd depend what exactly you did and what the situation was. If the officer was trying to call off the dog but the dog didn't listen, then perhaps the one kick wouldn't go very far in terms of getting a long sentence.

I remember some documentary where a police dog that was killed got a full "Police Funeral", so I assume their wellbeing and life is very important. More important than your average dog.

Well, it is part of the system.
But I think it'd be more along the lines of resisting arrest.

Well it should be a big deal to harm or kill because training a police dog costs a lot of money

You would not face the same charges as assaulting a person in the UK but you would be facing animal cruelty charges.

Usually, they consider all police dogs "officers" or appendages of the actual officer.
So if the person like kicked it, or whatever, they can't charge the person with something like animal cruelty to assualting an officer.
Kinda messed up because obviously your natural instinct is to fight the dog back so it would stop biting the shit out of you :/

Key is to never run away or piss off an officer.

yes it is
the main reason is psychological
you NEVER fuck with a cop of any kind

they had an RCMP officer shot and killed in a TINY fly in only hamlet in the faaaaar north
this place has one road that spans like half a km er something thats it
like TINY place
2 cops is the entire detachment

when he was killed
in under 24hrs there was over 300 cops in that tiny hamlet
and they chased him through the bush and down into Alberta a massive man hunt
they got him like 3 days later

i can't remember what its called but when you attack an officer its seen as a complete disassociation like if you can attack or kill a cop then you can go after anyone theres nobody you'd back down from which is very dangerous

so a police dog is seen in many ways as a partner allot of cops have two per squad car buddy system
well the K9 is one human one dog nine times out of ten its a german Sheppard
they can be very gentle my brother in laws friend works as one
i used to play with the dog in the backyard he was a sweetheart
a time for work and a time for play i guess

A whole funeral with the bagpipes and the parade.

anyway
I think the person that assaults the dog, would get charged with resiting arrest, disorderly conduct, and whatever else they were being chased for.

LOL this reminds me of the time a police dog bit my friend's leg as he was running away. He fell on the floor and booted it away, the next thing we heard was "Officer down, officer down!"

I've heard that they're considered almost full police officers in Sydney - so I'd imagine you could get charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer, not to mention they'd probably let the dog have a second go at you while you were 'cuffed..
