View Full Version : What Does It Mean When A User Is Frozen?

This might sound like a dumb question. I get the point that their account is frozen, but is it because they've done something wrong, but not wrong enough to be banned? Or what?

I was literally just wondering this. :P

Freezing a user makes them unable to use the forum systems. We don't ban them, but I understand it's a warning to them as they sit their time in "detention", and/or the staff decides what action to take and how to admonish the person.

It is like a time-out. Often, they have made a mistake, usually a fighting attack, and they are frozen for usually about 3 days and they can't log on as far as I know. We also freeze spammers or adverts to stop them from creating more problems until a gmod or admin can come ban them and clean up the mess from a spam attack or stuff in forums that aren't a moderator's.

I thought it was something along those lines.

That's actually a really good analogy. Members can be freezed multiple times without being banned. It's basically the staff's way of telling them they screwed up and are being punished by not being able to use the site's features. When the punishment is over, which can be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, they go back to being a normal member hopefully having learned their lesson.

It's not technically freezing, but yes, underage members are unable to use site features until 13 (if they're caught.)

How can you possibly find out if a member is under-age?

Some don't read the rules, meaning they don't read that you have to be 13+ to be a member.

Sometimes when they post in p101 surveys or ask a question they say something like "Hi, I'm 11 years old.." There are other times unique to each case too like if they say they're a member on another forum and link to it, then you see that they are underage there.

Well, if they don't read the rules, then that would mean they typed in their real date of birth when they registered, and if your not 13 shouldn't it come up with a message saying something like "Sorry, but you are not of age to become a member at Virtual Teen." or something like that. And if they lied about their age to become a member, why the hell would they come out and say what it really was in a post?

Some members make a slip and mention that they are underage. They just make that mistake. Some members don't read the rules and say that you are supposed to be 13 in order to join. So they lie and then make a mistake later. Some members admit their age in a private message or in the chatroom. Some may admit it through MSN and then other members report this. Some mention their age on the puberty surveys and then get banned.
Those are the ways.

If you can keep a secret they'll never know. It's similar to the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.
