for all you people hoping to get vista or windows 7, DON'T! there are at least 10 reasons why not, and here they are:
1. Sucks up your RAM. Even on my Mac, i had 300 MB of free RAM, and i simply opened powerpoint and my free space magically reduced 100 MB.
2. Ramps Processor. it will drain a laptop battery in less than 45 minutes
3. Listen to 75% of the vista users. it really doesn't work.
4. more code, more chance of something going wrong. Microsoft doesn't shorten their code or organize it, it's just endless jumble of code. More code, more errors
5. it really isn't cheaper than mac! Soo many upgrades, you might as well buy a macbook air!
6. unstable. why not build off a more stable form of operating system (not Apple, copycats) like UNIX.
7. Like the features? MAC HAD IT FIRST.
8. There are only more games for PC because more people use it. macs have incredible potential for that!
9. Beautiful OS X
10. Wait for Snow Leopard, and cut price in half, install time in half, boot time in half, load time in half, Processor usage in half, for all of the "innovative" goodies of Microsoft.

Before i start 7 hasn't even been released (retail version) yet so don't say it sucks
Its not really meant for macs.
My batter lasts alot longer then 45 minutes and i run vista.
It works, its just not the best
7 is supposed to be streamed line and have less code.
Microsoft doesn't make computer they make the operating system.
Stability was corrected in service pack 1
too bad people use p.c's and not macs sales prove it.
Is the potential used, no
not really a reason.
wait until 7 and then we see what is better.

First, there is no point in this thread that I see.
1. I'm running Windows 7 RC perfectly with 512MB RAM.
2. I have a 7 year old laptop, and I get just over 1 hour with W7.
3. Wait for W7.
4. Download a free Anti-Virus. And errors are fixed my small updates.
5. Yes it is. Decent Windows laptop=$600, Decent Mac laptop=$1500+
6. All the updates usually fix that.
7. And your practically paying for the Apple brand name to get them.
8. I hate PC gaming so I have no say.
9. Aero
10. Windows 7 is amazing, even on a 7 year old Thinkpad T41, so just you wait.
I seriously can't believe I just defended Microsoft......

Actually, Mr. Idiot.
True, Vista may have its memory consumption issue but if you keep your arse updated and keep your system maintained properly then you won't suffer so fucking bad.
As for the laptop, I wouldn't really know because a Desktop is the way to go but I'm sure your wrong.
I'm a Vista user, it is fucking GOOD!
Name me any Operating System that has short codes and has no errors what so ever.
Buying a Windows based system is MUCH cheaper than buying Mac in general; also if I recall a friend I know said Mac know nothing about Service Packs and instead release them as a new OS. (But I don't pay attention to Mac so I might be wrong)
You honestly have no idea.
But who was first? I'm pretty sure Microsoft was the first Operating System around.
I highly doubt a Mac could beat a Windows system and besides it matters more about your hardware potentional rather than was OS you have.

1) Applies entirely to Vista, and not to 7 at all, and computers not designed for it (I.E. Macs)
2) I'd like to see proof? My laptop got 2 hours when it was running Vista.
3) I can attest to that.
4) Yet, It doesn't. Imagine that.
5) It depends on how you treat your computer.
6) Perfectly stable, I've never seen a blue screen, EVER. On my win95, win98, winXP, or winVista systems
7) Proof?
8) Again, where is proof of this potential? Even current Apple desktops are several years behind in technology
9) This is all preference and hardly a valid point at all.
10) How about you back it up instead of running your mouth?
Anyway, your opinion isn't going to convince anyone to run out and buy a $1500 computer.
I seriously can't believe I just defended Microsoft......

On an extra note, Macs are extra expensive Say $1500 for example as the above poster said. You can get about a Core2Duo with maybe 4GB or 2GB worth of memory with maybe 500GB HDD; maybe less.. And er, some Apple crap.. With $1500 (Or approx. £1000 for me) I can get a Quad core system with 8GB of memory with maybe 1TB.. Maybe 2TB with a 24" monitor and loads more crap; providing I seek the non-rip off sites.
I think my Windows would love the hardware I can give it that Apple don't get. (This is actually rough, I didn't do research for this post, though I have done before and will again if anyone thinks I'm wrong.)

Ok I can see this thread getting closed if posts carry on like this. But I shall add my two cents.
OP: It's obvious that you prefer Mac OS to windows, but really it doesn't sound like you've used Windows 7 an awful lot (or at all even). I've been running Windows 7 for a few months now. If I thought that Vista or XP were better I would have changed back to it. But 7 is a great operating system even in the stage it's at now. I've never had any problems with freezing or slowness like I did with Vista. I think when it's finished it will be brilliant, far from perfect but that's mostly down to personal preference.
You're right in saying that it uses a lot of ram, I have 4gb and I'm using 1.43gb running only firefox (12 tabs) and msn messenger. But still that doesn't bother me, I have loads of ram free and ram is SO cheap these days upgrading is a cheap and easy thing to do.
So everyone has their own personal preference, personally I think Mac OS X is great, but I'm so used to windows that I can't get on with it, so I will just stick with windows.
Just please STOP the fanboyism, it's not cool.

This thread shouldn't get closed at all because we're all on topic and this thread was originally designed to be 1 OS vs another OS (Or company vs Company) which is technology related. This should be allowed, I know I've allowed this sort of thing on the forum I moderate and it gives people the chance to compare each things with its pros and cons. I'd be pissed at the mod team if they closed this; because in all fairness if this was closed then they're not allowing us techies being techies.
And er.. I forgot what Iw as going to say to your post now. Oh yeah, you're using 1.43GB with Firefox and what not MSN.. As to a reply to the OP. I find this fun cause Vista did actually love my RAM but.. With Windows 7 =D Look at the magic of what a new OS can do. ^_^
I have Firefox open (1 tab), MSN open (1 convo), Skype Video call, Installing Win7 on VMware currently, playing music and Ic an do a tad more.. And I'm using 3GB, with NO lag. Sure this maybe a bad example but once my V-install finishes it will frop 0.5GB maybe 1GB while running the OS (Maybe - Might be wrong, it always varies) but I mean.. I'd like to see a Mac do what I can do right now on Windows 7.
Also, What Build are you running Ziggy?

I like macs, but you give mac-owners a bad name.
1. Ram usage not a problem for me. I have 4GB, plus Windows was properly designed to use "virtual-memory" (unlike Mac OS).
2. My laptop lasts for about 2 Hours 20 with Windows 7, and it has a low capacity battery
3. Vista is good if you knew how to tweak it, but Windows 7 fixes vista and MUCH MORE.
4. More code because of MORE FEATURES. Also Windows has to be backwards compatible, that is why the code can be untidy.
5. Oh the Irony! It used to be that macs were much more expensive. Now they're evenly priced.
6. Windows XP is a brilliantly stable OS, and Windows 7 is looking like that as well. Plus old Macs had terrible reliability compared to old windows.
7. Some of Windows features were on Macs first, but some were on Windows first.
8. Macs restricted hardware and upgradability will seriously limit gaming potential.
9. I do concede that Mac Os looks quite good
10. Prove half that shit you blurted out.
Mac and Windows both have pros and cons. You give Mac users a bad name as I've said earlier. We have MS Office 2007. Now take your bitching about OSs to somewhere that cares.

I love how Macs just WORK.

Macs 'Just work' because it's proprietary software running on proprietary hardware. There's no variations, no customizations, no nothing that Apple has to compensate for.
It isn't Microsoft's responsibility to code for hardware variations. They don't have to, but they make it one of their top priorities to be as compatible as possible.
Really, it's up to hardware manufacturers to make sure their hardware is stable in a Windows based system.
Also, when you generalize 'Windows' like that, do I need a new computer to run Windows 95? I think not.
Depends on your version.
Same as with Macs, do you need a new Mac to run MacOS? No.
Can you run MacOS X on a <2000 Mac? No.
Same thing with Windows.
Of fucking course you'll need a modern computer to run a modern OS.

seconded Apple and Microsoft released both of there first OSes in 1984 with one fundamental difference was a certain thing that changed all of computing as we know if the GUI, Apple used the GUI and most agree it was Superior to DOS while Microsoft was using the command line interface for the next 11 years when they released Windows 95 which to fair was Mac 84.

Of course they want people to switch to 7, but they have not and will not send out a "virus" to make XP no longer work.
What you're probably experiencing is WGA, and the fact that since they used the same Key on all their computers, and it PROBABLY wasn't a VL, it's a violation of the EULA, and now it probably doens't past WGA, and thus it's stopped working. If that's the case, it serves them right. If it's something else, I can guarantee you it's not a virus MS sent out.

1.) It caches RAM, and does a better job of it than XP did. Just because you don't have a lot of RAM marked "Free" doesn't mean it's doing a bad job managing it. It caches RAM for fast access to programs you have had opened recently. If it runs out of RAM that is marked as "Available" it will free up the "cached" RAM and start using that. I don't understand what "Even on my Mac" means. Why would it work any differently? However much RAM you have on your Mac, it probably isn't enough. I have 4GB of RAM on my laptop, (And it was a relatively inexpensive laptop I bought a year ago, 550$ new) and I'm currently only using 50% of the RAM, and that's with almost 70 processes running, several Firefox Windows with multiple Tabs, and a lot of general nonsense programs that hog memory that I really should close. I've also got an uptime on here of 24 days. As for the Powerpoint thing, It depends on the PowerPoint file you're opening, some PPTs are over 100MB in file size, and have a huge amount of pictures, and require a lot of RAM. You could be talking about a 2 MB file, or a 300MB PPT file. Besides, that's Office you're talking about, Not 7.
2.) Depends on what you're doing, what power settings you've set, and how long your battery lasts in general. If you've got a weak battery, it may last that long or less. If you've got a good one, it'll last longer. And, if you're running the CPU at 100%, playing DVDs, and encoding a video, of course it'll last less time.
3.) Vista isn't 7. They've made a LOT of changes to 7 over Vista. Also, Vista is a LOT better now than it was in 2006 when it came out. The x64 version is also a lot more stable and usable than the x86 version, as far as I'm concerned, and I wouldn't run the x86. I've run the x64 for a few years now, without much issue. The Beta versions of 7 were more stable than Vista was when it was RTM. We're talking about entirely different things here.
4.) How do you know it has more code? They could have re-written some of it, or removed some of it when changing things. And, even if they didn't, who is to say that Apple doesn't do the same thing with OSx? A lot of times as things progress, coding gets more extensive.
5.) I have no idea what you're talking about. My old laptop from 2006 will run it, and some things from before that will run it as well. The specs for 7 are basically the same as Vista, but 7 seems to run better on machines with lesser specs than Vista does. A Macbook Air basically cannot be upgraded.
6.) They're not programming Unix. And, it's not even close to being as unstable as you make it sound. Like I said, my laptop has a 24 day uptime right now, with the RC1 of 7. It would have been longer, I had issues with drivers from Intel, which is Intel's fault, not MS's.
7.) Huh? Apple steals from MS, MS steals from Linux, Linux steals from MS, and so on and so forth. They all "steal" ideas from each other.
There's no point in addressing the rest of your "points."

Microsoft and Windows Vista rock. If theres a game you can't play on vista you're suppose to right click on the game (or whatever it might be) go to properties and go to the compatbilty tab. Then select run in compatbilty for Windows XP or 98,95 etc whatever the game needs to run on.
Another thing is Mac can't do nothing besides open the internet (if it can even connect to an internet that is) and one day ever single program will be made for Microsoft only as many things are now.

Man whats with all the bashing of this guy? I am a true PC windows man purely for the gaming especially Civ 4 and Command and conquer and it might sound crazy but I just can't get used to only one mouse button but agree with some of his points. Vista is too slow, with 1gb ram running internet explorer my ram usage is 72%, cpu around 10%(intel Core 2 Duo 2ghz).
Alot of the features do suck I can see the point behind many features but for me vista seems to cut back on controll of your computer. I find the new control panel options annoying however overall I would never want a Mac(except maybe an Itouch) and don't plan on changing anytime soon.

The reason your RAM usage is at 72% is because Windows does this thing called "caching" (Pronounced cash-ing) where it stores data from often used programs in RAM so it doesn't have to load it from the hard drive. The Cache can easily be deleted or modified, so when a program requires more RAM than what's 'free', Windows will automatically get rid of some of the Cache to make room. It sounds confusing, but there's more available RAM than what's free.
Also, if you're having issues with performance, install a x64 version of Windows.

I just laugh at how inefficient PCs are. my teacher told me about this "really cool" program where you add and remove applications from any PC. First, it has to search for all of the literally thousands of files. Then, you choose the ones you would like to delete. Wait 2-5 minutes for it to complete the job.
On a mac you simply drag the application (which contains all the files it needs in its folders) to trash, its not that hard.

I laugh at how fan boys pick out anything to complain about the competition.

I laugh at how I saved about $600 and built a PC which I run anything I so desire on.
Anything by Apple is overpriced to the extreme, not to mention thus far all the experiences I've had with iPods, the computers, etc. have been far worse than anything else I've tried. Maybe I'm unlucky, but their stuff isn't worth it.

for all you people hoping to get vista or windows 7, DON'T! there are at least 10 reasons why not, and here they are:
Look mate... dont QQ over ms... they have the majority of computer users
I personally like mac for the style, nothing else, I hate vista but now im running W7 on a Lenovo s10e, it failed at vista but it works really well with 7 and i get 8 hours on full aero effects
So.... Lol and stop sooking

Microsoft's fucking problem is that they are going to have everyone switch to Vista or 7. My grandparents have the same XP on all the computers. Thats right! They same disk. Guess what happen last week? Microsoft sent a virus to crash the fucking computer!
Interesting, my friend's XP has crashed countless times and they are forced to switch to 7 because they got another virus recently.
