View Full Version : Am I doing this right?

Yesterday, I found that the power cord (the cord that plugs into my laptop from the power supply) has been damaged.

How bad you may ask?

Well, some of the silver fibers have been damaged as well- in some places to the point where I can almost see the wire, but I don't think the wire inside has been affected. I've recently tried to repair it with electrical tape.

Does this fix the problem? I've recieved the advice from a answered question on Yahoo Answers, but after checking more questions, I'm begining to have doubts.

I think the damage might have been caused by either my chair in my room, or when my dad takes the laptop to work.

It's my dad's laptop, and I really don't think he would be happy to pay for another power brick. Was it a step in the right direction, trying to fix the cord with electric tape?

Try to reinsulate the cord with tape so that the wires are covered with the density of it's surrounding cords.

The risk of exposed wires can be fatal if:
The wires cross-causing sparking
moisture-sparking and electrocution if touched
snapped wires- like if a power line breaks outside

retape it and be super careful not to bend the wires in any way.

If you could post a picture of it that would be a lot more helpful..

Here it is after I took the tape off to take the picture, it's pretty bad, I know, but it doesn't look like it went into the actual wires. I wonder, the little fibres the cross, are those part of the armor? I've seen a diagram of a cord, and it showed the outer protection, the armor, the conductors, etc. Plus, nothing really happened when I was using the laptop with the cord connected to it...

if you see the wires cover them and do not move them or you will eventually break them.

Otherwise they are safe

Here's a picture, just in case anyone didn't see it.

That's fine, just wrap in lots of electrical tape and you wont have a problem.
