Holy shit.
Definitely time for an upgrade.
I think about every 3 - 4 years.

Anything over 5 years is getting old

Definitely before 5 years for a laptop, and 6-7 years for a desktop. But that depends how you treat them. Like I treat my laptop (IBM) like a really old, fragile person, and its still working after 6 years! But our desktop (HP) is 2.5 years old and its slow as hell. And the Gateway we got in 2001 still works perfectly. So sometimes it depends on brand.
Sorry if that dragged on, I'm in a good mood lol :D

It really depends on the brand, and how much you spent on it, but 7 years (or the 10 your dad wants it to last) is WAY too long, since 2000 my family has gone through three different desktops (but I demand performance, and just nag my parents until they give in :P) , and I'm actively searching for another.
I bet its single-core processor (ugh, so slow) too, anything below quad is not worth the investment anymore.
P.S. I'd wait until Windows 7 arrives on new desktops to even think about buying /end P.S.

Anything over 1 day seems to be old lately. xD A good estimate is about 5 years, when a new OS comes out, or when it seems your computer needs everything wiped and reinstalled. I think now that the manufacturers are giving the Vista to 7 upgrade for free, you should get a new PC.

Well, its always been a year for me.. But now I have my new custom built system by moiself.. I won't be replacing it, instead I'll upgrade it and if I DO need to replace it, it will only be (Hopefully) 1 component, rather than the whole machine.

Yeah I have a custom system, but the problem is that the motherboard becomes obsolete and can't handle the newer processors or components (like DDR3 RAM or the newer Quad cores)

yer, customs rule, you can just replace and upgrade the parts, you can on some pre-builts, however, I would say every 6-12 months, but only because I'm used to upgrading often... Laptops should be instantly upgraded to desktops in my opinion, i hate them! slow little things...
PS) has anyone else had an E-SYSTEM?? GOD kill me now!!

I tend to upgrade bits of mine when I have the money to do so and when I feel it necessary to do so.
Could do with a new monitor atm, haven't got the cash to though :(
