Beta is no longer available.
You can try the RC for now.

If you have a separate partition on your HDD (Or a second HDD) you can install 7 with no risk of losing your XP data.
If you only have a single partition, then you'll have to split that partition into 2, and make sure you allow at least 20-30 gigs for the 7 install.

I'm running Windows 7 RC and Windows Vista on a partition so if you can do what the xbox guy said then it should work good. Vista has a built in function that lets you partition your hard drive i don't know about XP.

Since older windows use a bios file or something, and vista uses something new. O.o

If you installed 7 to the same partition as Vista then the action you specified would be expected.
As, 7 uses alot of the same files as Vista does (Same name at least, most of 'em have been modified).

Every Windows Operating system /must/ be on a different partition.
You can install multiple OSs to 1 partition however.
Ex. Windows & Linux, as they have completly different folders/files.

I'm using Windows 7 RC atm, just single booting on that.

I absolutely love it :) I was expecting something similar to vista, which is crap imo, but I was somewhat impressed.

It's pretty stable, pretty pleasant to the eye and I've had no problems with running any programs on it, so it gets a thumbs up from me :)

I've been running Windows 7 since the Beta, I only just moved to using it as my main OS when MS emailed me about their RC, from their I went from Build 7100 to Build 7201 and I'm currently on build 7264. Each build got better than the previous version I used. I've been refered to the ltest build which is 7600 which I've still got to research on Win7 forums if its finally the real deal and I may go on that; I've also preordered my copy of Win7 E Pro x64 to save myself money in the future. I'd recommend this OS even in RC to use it because its simply better than XP ever will; and Vista isn't crap.

Can you run programs like itunes on it?, because i really need my ipod. and will it take over my xp, or will i have the ability to use both?

Windows 7 will run any Windows application, for the most part.
iTunes will run, and sync your iPod.

It will not take over your XP partition (Unless you install it to that), and you will retain the ability to use both.
After you install 7, when you boot your computer, you will be presented with a 'boot screen.' Where there will be 2 options, 'Windows 7' and 'Previous Versions of Windows'. Selecting the 'Previous Versions of Windows' will let you boot to XP, selecting 'Windows 7' will let you boot to Windows 7.

You may have to configure folder permissions on the XP partition, if you want to access your documents and media files and such. But we'll cross that path if we need to.

Either post in this thread, or PM me if you need any help, instruction, or if any issues arise.

did anyone learn ANYTHING from Vista??? DON'T!

Not unless you have at least 1GB more than the system req. if it says 2 GB ram, go for 3 or stick to XP.

Mac is seriously faster, better, and still QUITE entertaining!

I have the Release Candidate on my laptop, and its even better than XP in my view. You'll have to partition your hard drive to have both OS's. I suggest Easeus Home Partition Manager (Clicky) (http://download.cnet.com/Easeus-Partition-Manager-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html?tag=mncol) for that, It works great on XP.

Personally, I though XP was superior to Vista. Does anyone know how it compares to either?

XP will always be the choice if you want simplicity or have a computer with no-so-great hardware. Windows Vista is what Windows ME was to XP really.

Um ok, i thought this post was done when i said thanks for the help, and this is not vista, it is Win. 7 RC. So my ram will be fine. And there is no reason to leave bitchy comments, because you are really not helping anyone out which is what this site was made for >=[
