Umm, does really depend...there is also a difference between getting local anesthetic or general anesthetic. With local anesthetic you will just get a shot or two at the base of your penis to numb it, with general anesthetic you are asleep for the whole procedure.

For actual technique some doctors prefer a clamp of some kind and others will just use scissors and/or scalpel. Regardless, they would most likely give you stitches as well which can either dissolve after a while or will need to be removed.

For older dudes, I believe the doctor uses a scissors and clamps and basically cuts down the foreskin from the tip to where it attaches below the glans, and trims around the penis.

Local or gen'l anesthesia, day surgery (it's a relatively quick procedure), pain killers, a bandage, and you're out of action for a couple of weeks.
