I've worked in a few restaurants, nothing fancy though although I do cook at home sometimes. You have to be able to handle pressure because in a larger restaurant (where the more money is), it can be very very hectic and you're in charge of it so you cannot let it fall or else it's your ass on the plate.

And I can tell you that you don't really earn shitloads of money..

And by ( actually if ) the time you are earning a lot of money.. You'll have years & years of experience, recommendations and so on.. It takes time & talent.

Also yes it is pressure and lots of it!

However I think its a good choice.. Your working options are limitless if your a good chef as making food doesn't ask for a language.. And its enjoyable if you really like it.

thanks for the posts.

I've already had expirences with lots of pressure. My instructor put me in charge of the front of the house when we had coookout kinda thing. It was a blast but a lot of work to keep all my people in line

I'm signing up after HS, for a Culinary Academy in California. I'm taking my prep courses. But I already know how to cook. Fried zucchini, Lasagna, steak...

Thanks Mom. :)

I've worked as a sous chef in a restaurant before; there are loads of good and bad things about being a chef.

Good: It can be very rewarding, the pay I used to get was good, I enjoyed being able to work in a proper kitchen with very good ingredients

Bad: Verrrryyy long days sometimes, could be really stressful, you ached like hell after each shift, head chef was an idiot (to put it politely) plus I finally left when he threw a knife at me one night

I think it's a good profession to go into as long as you're capable of managing your time very well, working to high standards sometimes, you have a good understanding of food / how to combine flavours / how to prepare food well and also working under a lot of stress sometimes.

I enjoy cooking at home sometimes, but dont think the stress and the hours would suit me for a profession
