This comes out of another post about Bush and bad things happening. The United Nations wants to take the internet out of the hands of the Nonprofit corporation for a the assignment of domain names and numbers, the company that sets the standards that allow all computers on the internet to talk to each other. This is an independant corporation that does not seek to turn a profit. Nor does it do anything to help protect the internet from viruses and the like. It keeps the infrastructure as bare bones as possible so hosters, service providers, and end users can do anything they want with it. Its not the best way to send things like live video because the pieces get routed all over the place, a direct solid connection would work better for that, but the folks in charge leave it up to us to figure out how to do that, if that's what we want.

Well certain countries at the UN think the internet needs to be part of that orginization, internatioanlized. These Countries are China, Iran, Namibia, etc. Other countries, like Europe don't like a US nonprofit being in charge for the whole world in which they get no say, and can't really regulate it. And its a prestige thing too, it is an american company.

I think the UN and its Dizzing Diet of Dictators and Despots should keep their hands off. I mean the UN has doen such a good job preventing wars and attrocities like Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and now Darfur. Not to mention Polpot. They have eradicated world hunger through UNICEF. IAEA International Atomic Energy Agency has kept Nations from developing nuclear weapons. Nations like Pakistan, India, North Korea, and Libya. Not to mention the rowsing success that one the Head of the IAEA a Nobel Peace Prize for STOPPING Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Is this the people we really want running our internet? Thoughts? Alternatives? Any one? Beuler? Beuler?

the internet as it is, is grand. i know there is problems with child pron and hate sites, but my putting it under the control of anyone would only make it horrible. alot of freedoms would be taken away.

They rock, GO UN. lol anywho, the I-net should be in the hands of the people, allways, fuck government internvention with every aspect of our lifes. Was democrocy not created to put power in the hands of the people, so why the fuck are we being controlled like lab rats.

I don't know if deomcracy is ever created. It seems people just sor of fall into it when they have tried everything else out and realized it sort of sucks. Democracy sometimes seems to suck because it gives voice to other people, and face it, people are dumb. I'm dumb too, I'm not going to pretend I'm above the fray here. Lots of people don't know how dumb they are. Socrates said that the true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. Sometimes I forget this wisdom too. So we have a bunch of people who think they know best, but often they don't. There are lots more ways to be wrong then there are to be right.

So thinking every one else is dumb they try and manipulate the dumb people like lab rats. But people really aren't any dumber then the people trying to manipulate them. Without even thinking about it every manipulation gets less effective every time its used. Just look at old commercials some time. They wouldn't convince me to by a cigaret from fred flinstone. Campaign adds lag behind so they are less convincing each go round.

Look on the bright side, once you've learned the maze you can do anything you want, within it's confines.

well, I consider the first real democrocy to be the united states after the revolutionary war. the constitution was the first democratic constitution that put the power of government in the hands of the people. in the dec. of independence it states:

"....governments are instituted among men."

I take this as saying that the commen people rule the government. I will now take this time to quote myself:

"....we forget that it only takes one person to change the opionions of everyone else.....people are forgetting that we have the power to change the government, because we are the government, thats the power of a democorcy."

Anywho, back to the subject of the UN and the net. this is not a product that should be in the hands of the government, so they can what, limit our freedom of speech, our freedom to write this things, hell no, we don't want to be restricted, keep the net in the hands of the public.

Aha! A contradictory opinion.
Actually I don't understand. How would having the UN run the internet help locate terrorists? I don't see the connection. The UN hates Isreal, the Oil For food program helped funel weapons and supplies to sadam hussain and make sure he had the money to pay suicide bombers. The weapons inpectros were mocked by Sadam's own son in law, they have it on tape. The IAEA didn't even know that Libya had a nuclear weapons program. I don't see how the UN could help find terrorists with the internet.

Oldest written constitution Koler, Yehaaw! 200+ years and still going strong, no one can beat our record.

well no two computers can have the same internet protocol adress, no two network interface cards can have the same media access control adress so if that is what we are talking about there has to be a great deal of international cooperation. i mean we are running out of available ip adresses, so the tcp/ip system (first version of which was originally developed by the department of defense...not al gore) has to be changed.

No, the internet cant be "run".. I learnt this in Computer Studies

" One person or organization does not run the internet. Instead, The Internet Society (ISOC), a private, not-for-profit group, makes recommendations guiding its growth. ISOC decides the protocols or rules that make the internet work, such as Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP)"

So no the UN is crap and they cant run the web
