I was looking around the blog settings page, and I noticed something for a Wordpress API key. What is a Wordpress API key? What does it do?

Right, I'm not going to be the best to answer this, but here goes.
Akismet is basically a spam-prevention service for blogs. I don't know how it works as I've never used it before, but it basically tests comments etc. on your blog and gets rid of ones that it deems spam. When you sign up for wordpress, you get what is called an API key, and since you can enter it in that field you have there on your blog.
I don't really think you need spam prevention on VT at this time, but you can try it if you want. I'm not sure exactly why the system needs that key to run, but it does.
Short version: Sign up for word-press and you can have spam-protection on your VT blog. :P

You answered it better than I could have, Rex.
Like Rex said though it isn't something you have to enter or sign up for.
