View Full Version : Physical exam...

I have my yearly physical exam scheduled for next week and was curious if other parents stayed in the room or not during the exam?
Until last time parents stayed in room, but dad always used to take me and last time my mom took me and she didn't stay. I'm hoping that they don't (or that my mom takes me again) since I have a piercing that they don't know about yet and will be REALLY awkward to explain. My doctor knows already from last physical and didn't comment. I'll probably take it out but you can still tell that the area was pierced...*crosses fingers* here's to hoping parents stay out
Also, do your parents have you get drug tested when you get a physical?
I don't do drugs, they know it, and it always makes me feel awkward. Debating whether to ask them to stop having me take the test or if that will just make them suspicious of something going on.
Addendum: Whats the most shots you've had in one go? My dad recons I need 4 but can for the life of me figure what they'd be.

My mom always takes me. and she always leaves, if you are uncomfortable with your parents being there, you can just ask them to leave. lol. I mean come on. Once you reach the age where your doctor is telling you to pull down your pants, your parents dont need to be there for that show, just simply ask, "dad would you mind stepping out?" Im sure he'll understand. as for the shots. you probably need your tetanus shot, and other usual vaccines, like maybe flu or something. I cant really answer that question. sorry.
My parents don't drug test me. and Ive never actually heard of that, granted I get my blood taken every time. Which i was told for allergies and what not. it may be awkward to take the drug test, but if i were you Id just live through it. Because it would more then likely arouse suspicion. and in one go.. i think the most Ive had were 3 shots in one visit. tetanus, flu and one other one i can remember.
Hope this helps :D

Hmm, yeah I guess that works...usually I wouldn't mind if they stayed but they would totally flip out if they found out that I had a piercing in my dick

At the age you're at, it's very likely that the doctor will have your parents stay at regardless. But always asking them and saying you're embarrassed is completely understandable at your age, and thus should work fine.
For shots, the most I've ever had at a time was 3. The doctor knows what's best though, so if they do more, don't worry, it's safe.
For the drug testing, here's a question: How much of a hassle is it? I've never been tested myself, but if it isn't very long, I wouldn't worry about it. Willingly doing a drug test certainly will inspire more confidence between parents and son, and it will make them more likely to trust you in other situations. It's good for your image to them, in any case.

I dont know whether your parents would stay in... i suppose thats up to them. But im sure if you ask them to step outside then they SHOULD respect your privacy.
I have no idea about the shots or drug testing... sorry

Hey, it's ur body. They'd get over it after a while. Besides, I doubt they are gonna be watching your body that close. You should be fine as long as you take it out.

Well yeah as others stated if you don't want your parents present then you can just ask. They shouldn't mind at all and they should understand completely. At our age, it's normal to feel insecure.
As for the shots, well if you want you can ask the doctor what they're for and seeing as how they're going into your blood system you kind of have a right to know what the heck they're giving you. But you should not have to worry about this because doctors are there to help you and unless he's some quack doctor who cares more about money than his patient then you should be just fine.

My mom always takes me and she stays in the room for most of the physical but when it comes time to drop the pants she steps out. The doctor usually says something like "Now I have to test for hernias (definatly not how you spell that)" and she just gets up and walks out. Since it is last I then come out and we leave. Simple. If your parents stay in the room and you want them out then just ask and if they don't leave then explain to your doctor that you aren't comfortable and he may be able to do something.
When it comes to the shots I don't know to much but I only had to get one shot at my physical before Middle School and I haven't had one since. I am now going to be a sophomore. If you want to know then ask the doctor what is in them. He should have to tell you.
Hope I helped.

Your parents should respect your privacy no matter what. Period. As for the drug testing it really shouldn't be an issue. Just close your eyes, and think of something more motivating. What really is the issue with the drug testing?

my mum always comes in the room, it's normal. as for the piercing, the doctor would know how to block her view mate, tell him to.
shots: 3 i think, but they're beneficial
drug tests: get used to it mate, it doesn't hurt and it'll give your parents piece of mind

There should be a curtain, if there's not, your going to a ghetto doctor. Or just one with an old facility. :\
Shots: 1, they always infuse all the vaccines into one syringe so it doesn't take as long. But your arm gets puffier. :(

hmm...that's the first I've heard of combining the shots into one needle, probably better than having to get a bunch of separate ones

Combining shots into the same needle should never be done. You have no idea what will happen...it depends on what you combine. You should also never use the same needle twice, even if it's for the same person and you just gave them a shot with the needle 2 min ago. That's why, once you get the shot, the needle retracts so it can not poke anyone and it can't be reused.

Now see, I wish my doctor said it to me like that. His exact words on my first hernia check was "Please remove your pants so I may better examine you!" I had to do a double take, I looked down, and back up, and in all seriousness. I said "What!? What do you want me to do!?" it was very traumatic. Now he just says "I need to examine your privates" :P

When I was younger my mom would take me and she would stay in but like would never look at me. Then for some odd reason my grandmother started to take me and would tell me that I'm old enough to go on my own and that she would wait in the waiting room. Now I take my self. As for the drug testing is it really that much trouble? I've never had it but I think all u do is pee in a cup and or like have a blood test. Unless ur scared of needels. Then that may b a differnet story. But look at it as if u don't do drugs what do u have to worry about. Hope this helps

yeah my mom always takes me and I ask her to leave when I get checked in that area. The shots you maybe getting are Hep C, Flu, Tetanus, and maybe Hep A I think.....Not sure but I know I got Hepatitis shots at your age. The most I had was 5 actually lol. one on each arm and leg and 1 on the butt XD. And if you're uncomfortable with the drug test maybe you should ask them why they make you take one? Like maybe you'll be able to ease their inquiries by just talking rather than having to pee in a cup.

how did you get a penis piercing at your age?
isnt it illegal for minors to get any kind of genital piercing?
also why did you get one O_O I love body modification but I could never get anything done down there, thats where i draw the line lol, but what ever tickles your pickle..

leg and 1 on the butt XD.
 what did you have to get on the leg and the butt??? whatever those are I hope I don't need them.
I'll talk to my parents about getting out of the drug test, we'll see.
Umm, and yeah genital piercings are pretty much illegal, which is why my parents would flip out so much, among other reasons. A friends brother who works in a tattoo/piercing parlor did it.

I personally think that it's not your parents' decision if they want to stay; it's yours. You are the one getting the physical here. As for the drug test, if you willingly take it there will be less fuss and less hassle. It doesn't take long anyways.

well its thankfully over...arm is sore after 4 shots...none in leg or but, dad stayed in room but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary and apparently my peeing in a cup was to test for urinary infections which I had while younger and not drugs as I had thought :P

usually, most parents dont stay in the room, but if they do, just tell your doctor that you want to ask him about private questions, and he will ask your parents to leave for the duration of the examination.
Most people dont get drug tests at a physical?
How did u get a peircing at age 14 without them knowing?

I went in alone. I didn't want my mom to see my junk. If you get an erection, don't worry, doctors expect that.

before I was 12 it seemed like it was just a quick check to make sure everything was developing normally. Now it takes a bit longer as doctor is checking for development, stds, testicular cancer, and hernias. Still it doesn't take long just 2-3 minutes or so. I've heard most people are standing up for it but for some reason my doctor always has my lie down for it.
how old are you that you've never had it?

Drugs test? Isn't that a little invasive? I think it might even be illegal if it's a state school but I could be wrong on that.

When I was 13 I completely forgot about the hernia part, so when my doctor told me to "pull down my undershorts" I was mortified, but did so with my mom present. It was the first time my mom saw my junk since I was like 8 and I was developing....but honestly it wasn't really a big deal.
