{edit: well the changed it to where it is now an option to censor them or not, so nevermind.}

I can't find an "article" about it yet, but people are talking about it. YouTube has now started censoring profanity, like bitch, shit, fuck, fucking, etc.

I found this on digg: http://duncsweb.com/2009/07/09/youtube-profanity-comments-now-censored/
The YouTube blog is completely blank for some reason?

http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/7923/utube.jpg (http://img194.imageshack.us/i/utube.jpg/)

The update was probably made yesterday, during the "scheduled site maintenance". People are now spamming the videos appearing on the Popular section of the site, either in mockery, fun, curiosity, or anger at the new update.

hotforwords:

Fred:

Oddly, it doesn't censor comments once you click the link that displays all of the comments posted on the video. Glitch?

sxephil:

Many people claim that this censorship restricts freedom of speech.
But, it's pretty obvious that YouTube aims to be a family site.

What do you think about the new YouTube censorship? Do you think it's a good idea? Do you think this is ok or fair for them to do? Do you like it? Why or why not?
Just thought it was interesting.

Probably a good idea..but I LOVE reading Youtube comments! They are soo ******* hilarious!!!

But it isn't really good for their site...especially when it is used for education and other things...

Youtube is banned in most schools that I know except for the teachers use.

And, simply, (to the probable crazy ultra-christian groups who probably lobbied for censored YouTube comments), if you dont want to see the comments, dont read them.

FUCKING HELL. Now theres no more debating on youtube!

YouTube is like, totally changing. I don't like it. I like the rawness and the normal people being promoted. Not all this commercial shit.

By the way, you can uncensor the words in the options button to the right of the comments.

Completely. All of the new pages suck. Don't mess with what isn't broken, Google.

I hate it now. I don't even WANT to go to YouTube anymore if I can't fucking cuss. Those sleezebag motherfuckers think that they can just fucking do that shit!? No, fuck those pussies! [/sarcasm]

Now, to be more serious; I think it's a bad idea. It's not going to stop people from typing the curses differently (i.e "Fuck" cane become "Fuk").

YouTube's been going through a ton of changes recently.

In my opinion, it's more annoying seeing ******* than the actual word itself.

Lol....why are the sxephil comments in the picture not censored :O

I explained that above. For some reason words on the "view all comments" page are not censored. Either that, or Phil allowed profanity on his videos (Idk if you can do that)

Go under the video, click text option, then uncheck "Hide profanity...yada...shit...yada"
No need to thank me, but I'll take cash, credit, debit and paypal.

Oh I see it now...cool. I don't think they had that before, maybe that added that because of complaints, but cool

They've had it a while before, it's just checked as the default now. See above for method on taking off.

They've had that for a while, I noticed it the day I saw the censoring.

If Youtube wants to be family-fucking-friendly, they may as well stop promoting things from College Humor and Playboy and similar channels. What, inappropriate content is allowed on corporate channels but not for the common user?

Some time ago, TheAmazingAtheist on Youtube wrote a wonderful article about Youtube's corporate double standard. Hot linkage action action action. (http://www.tjvids.com/)

Good that Google is starting to be affirmative on censoring with something.

Yes, but it's Google's own fault for trying to censor cursing on Youtube.

As I said: Google's motto: If it ain't broke keep fixing it until it is.

I don't see how giving users an option to hide profanity is bad. It's easy enough to remove, and having it on default just means it protects people who don't want to see it and have never been on the site before.

MoveAlong
July 19th, 2009, 07:51 PM
At first, people thought all profanity was censored, which is why people were so mad. Now, the default is off and it's not a bad thing anymore.

I liked it on. I dont really think people should be cussing as much as they do. It keeps the place somewhat cleaner and more attractive.
