I bought an old iPod from a friend, I want to use it WITHOUT itunes.

Is this possible? If so, what program can I use.

Also, can I save the music they have in it? I'd rather not reformat it.

Thanks.

I don't think that this is possible but after doing a quick google search it appears that there are some...underground programs that allow you to do it.

Had some information that I think might help

Go with iTunes. It's not as if it's going to give your computer problems or anything. There are, as Jon said, underground programs for it, but those can be a hassel and may not even be worth the amount of time you spend with them. But, since you've already chosen Jon's suggestion, I'm not going to keep you. If the programs are a hassel, then your number one choice should be iTunes.

I won't actually try it till the weekend (that's why I said I'll post next with with whether it worked or not), but the main reason I don't want to use iTunes is because it'll delete the songs that are already on there, even though they're legal copies (friend also sold album collection to me).

If their's a way to keep it with iTunes, cool. But I don't see a way around it, other than third party software.

Does anyone have any expeirence using this program, or other simillar programs?

Thanks again.

I normally don't double post, but I thought I'd need to to update those that care. :P

Okay, so I tried the program and, as it turns out, it -would- work, but I need to use iTunes to set my iPod up to use as a hard drive. If you do that, all kinds of options open up... you don't even really need ANY program, if you have it set to hard drive mode.

So I guess my new question is:

How can I get my iPod into hard drive mode without using iTunes...

anyone know?

Could use Winamp.
It can recognize & sync with iPods without the need for iTunes to have recognized it first.
I believe it can also put it into hard drive mode.

If your iPod is jailbroken or something, and you can't use iTunes, then just stop reading this.

If you CAN use iTunes, you can download mp3s and import them into iTunes. This way, you don't have to use iTunes for purchasing anything or using it for anything else, you just need is as a bridge between your iPod and PC.

If you want to put it in Storage Mode, the easiest way is just to use iTunes. Its not as if you have to pay to download it, and when your done you can just stop using it or uninstall it.

You can use a program called 'Songbird' (google it). It is fine with iPods, but the only downside is that it doesn't support video. It even supports music locked to iTunes with DRM. It is by the Firefox people, so it is good shiz...

even if it was possible, i would go with iTunes. NOT because its apple! well, kind of. iPods and iTunes are by the same company, and are literally made for eachother. iTunes is the way to go.
Anyway, it isn't possible and ipods just don't work as well without itunes.
