There is nothing a girl hates more than to be put in second place.
They saw how you were more interested in your skating than them.
They left you because they couldn't take being #2 in your list of things you love/prefer.

To be honest if my bf prefers something else more than me, i would leave him too.
it's not that you can't skate, but what you need to find is balance, or else it will happen over and over again.

If skating is/was your life, and you had a girlfriend, she probably felt like she didn't matter to you.
You need to sort out your priorities.
If a girl lets skating be your life, she hopes that you'll allow her to be a part of it.
Take a break from skating, and take her out and do something.
Pack a lunch, drive around aimlessly, and have a picnic on a random hill.
Take some waterguns and mix things up a bit.

Skating, i'm sorry to say, won't get you anywheres in life. Sure, it'll get you a few good years on the ramps, but once you reach a certain age, your body won't be able to take it anymore.
You should go to college, get a life, but keep skating as a hobby. and make sure you let the girl know you really do care about her.

Like Paula said, girls hate being in 2nd place.

Nobody wants to feel second place in a relationship or have their partner too busy to spend any time with them at all. Although at the same time nobody wants to have their partner smother them and spend all your free time with them.

Balance is the key. When in a relationship you have to spend enough time that works for the both of you to work - not too much, not too little.

Maybe you could have skated together or if thats what you did she probably thought you weren't paying attention to her and not loving her. you need to make time for her and for you skateboarding because both of those are important to you.
