If you want the thread locked report it and ask for it to be locked. A staff member will then do so. The report button is in the bottom left of every post next to the rep button.

What I don't get is why you must make that request. Why can you not do that yourself instead of getting someone else to do it for you? Coming to think of it, why can't you just delete your own threads and/or posts for that matter.

Because you two, the job of moderation is for the moderators. If people were allowed to delete or lock there threads whenever they feel, there would be a lot less activity and guests or users looking for answers to there questions would not be able to get them. That is one of the main reasons we don't delete threads unless they are incredibly pointless and spammy or to explicit, so guests or new members, or any member actually, can get answers to their questions. Also, you wouldn't want to lock a thread or delete if only 1 person has given you advice/help, because they may be wrong and others might want to input on the question.
Put simply, the site is better off when moderators and senior staff are the only ones who moderate.

As a new member (and compared to all of the moderators, you are a new member), you don't have the experience nor the understanding of our rules to be able to lock your own threads. You could make a change that was not needed - deleting your own thread, and then the thread is lost.
One of the beauties of VT is that people can look back on past posts and see what other people said about a problem - if you delete your thread, that info is lost.
Any member could also abuse their powers by closing a thread after they've argued with someone, trying to prove themselves right, and they'll just look like an ass. That could create a lot of tension.
It's really really not that hard to make a report if an old thread is brought back. It shouldn't bother you that much, it happens to a lot of people! The moderators will take care of it.
Moderators, Global Moderators, Counselors, and Administrators are there for a reason. They help oversee what gets done and how the site is managed. That's not a privilege to give to the members - it's for those people who've shown they really know what they're doing. Sorry.

Disagree. You don't know the different reasons as to why threads must be locked, and don't have the experience. Neither do most of the users here.
If it's an old thread, or you just you're own thread locked, report it.

If that is the case then request it to be locked from a mod. Simple fix.

I disagree with this. There's a report button at the bottom of every post you can use to give a reason why you want the thread locked. I just don't see a problem. If some new user comes and bumps your thread some 2 months later, then I'm sure a mod would take care of it or any other member would report it. I just don't see this happening.
