I was curious, does anyone know how affective they really are? What is are the actual efficiency rates? ... I'm not planning on having sex with anyone any time soon, I'm just curious about whether or not anyone knows the actual percentages. Thanks. :)

Lol. It does sound pretty effective but then again if you look at 98% at...say...some different angles than you can get statistics such as: If you have sex 100 times you can get 2 girls pregnant. That being said, most guys have sex way more than 100 times. And if a guy has sex 1000 times than the 2% the condom didnt work on is 20 girls. I know the probability is a long shot and all and the percentage is just there as a warning and all but thats just how i see it.

Lol, with my luck, I'd end up being one of the two girls that the condoms weren't affective with.

If used properly, a standard condom should be 100% effect at preventing pregnancy. Now, people make mistakes and if they do, your percentage drops very fast.

Common condom mistakes to make a condom break:

You ripped it,
You opened the package with your teeth,
You used a lube that broke down a latex condom,
You didn't use enough lube,
You wore two condoms and they broke,
the man started to put the condom on and realized it was upside down and had precum on the side that will later be inserted into a female.

It seems that most people in this thread have used different percentages. From what I've heard and read in this thread, It's around 98% effective.
If you want sex, and are trying to be extra extra safe, check out THIS (http://www.durex.com/en-GB/Products/Condoms/Pages/ExtraSafe.aspx) condom. Durex are a very well known company, and the condom shown in the link is slighly thicker, so it's extra safe. :)

I believe the actual effectiveness rate of condoms at preventing pregnancy is somewhere in the 80%'s range. Only the Pill comes close to 98%.

The way this is calculated is by asking people who use one form of contraceptive consistently and get pregnant, anyway.

ANY contraceptive is only effective if 'used properly', or consistently. In the case of the condom, the leading cause of pregnancy is breakage, and slipping off.

Still, you should be using a condom, it protects against against STI's, too. Just read the directions carefully, and make sure your partner uses them accordingly.

Stats vary widely depending on the study. The affiliation of the study can sometimes also effect the published results (the religious folk'll sometimes claim a 50% effectiveness, but they're obviously heavilly bias, and besides that, just plain wrong).

Generally speaking, the effectiveness of condoms at reducing the chance of pregnancy is actually much lower than what quoted in pamphlets, and much higher than what your pastor wants you to belive: around 85% (http://www.yourcontraception.com/birth-control-methods/condoms/male-condoms.html). This is, of course, because condoms aren't always used properly. The key to the 95-99% (http://www.yourcontraception.com/birth-control-methods/condoms/the-most-reliable-condoms.html) quoted rate is the line "when used properly".

Regardless, if you really want to lower your chances you need to be 'doubling up' on your protection. Which is not to say using two condoms (which is bad, as it makes them break more easily) but to use more than one method of protection. Like condoms AND birth control; or condoms AND a diaphram.

The 'extra safe' and 'ultra safe' versions of certain brands of condoms rely on this very method by adding controceptive jelly to the lube in the condoms. Effectively creating two controceptives in one product.

Whenever you decide to have sex, don't rely on any one controceptive, but two or three. Unless you like being called 'mommy'.

If used right, condoms are basically full proof.

The man needs to make sure that it doesn't break (which is difficult to do but it happens) and that cum doesn't touch you.

It would work 99 percent other than that
