Does it make seance to anyone that the Governor of California is taking money AWAY from education, when that is money going to the future, but is still giving money to fixing the roads that are not getting fixed?

My school district has cut all funding to the school. After getting cable for one of our middle schools. Yeah wtf?
It's really messed up what money is being diverted away from. Roads of course need to be fixed, but if we (as kids) aren't being educated, things are just going to be worse. We're already kinda screwd. So many people I know can't figure out basic math even with being in pre-calc.
Things are going to be messed up for awhile though. I'm not supprised this happend..

You can't be surprised at how stupid this generation is becoming when people cut funding from schools. At the same time, though, I think schools can sometimes survive conditions where they don't have a lot of money- it's not so much about teaching the required material with the best tools you can get your hands on, but rather, I feel schools should do more to encourage students to teach themselves, to get people interested in learning new things.
We are part of a generation that has access to a million libraries worth of information (the internet) right at our finger tips, and yet, we waste all our time on buying new clothes and partying and sending millions upon millions of useless text messages per hour.

Like always, I can't help but agree with Deschain. We have the tools we need, but our generation is just to lazy to learn things. They'd rather have fun than pay attention in class or do homework. They want to breeze by their education rather than appreciate the opportunities they actually have.
Our generation is spoiled. We haven't suffered enough. Our great-grandparents would be surprised what little work we do and all the things we do for fun. Kids say they hate school, which is implying they hate learning and work, which literally makes me scared. If people aren't willing to work for their education, they'll suffer as an adult. I'm afraid of what the future holds for me and the next generations because of the lack of interest in education.

I agree to an extent however no matter what sort of knowledge we can get from the internet or from experiences nothing can replace school experiences. School funding should be put foward before anything else it is something that right-wing parties all over the world fail to understand and has helped led to their downfall in the US, Australia and soon the UK(I consider labour Right-wing).

I do feel like funding cuts in education is unfortunate, but at the same time, students need to start taking more responsibility for their education. There are so many students in other countries that don't even have books and you have American kids bitching because they don't have glamorous school lunches or new laptops. Give me a break.

the whole deal with it is, is we need money for books, and to pay teachers. at my school our principal is really good at getting donations, but for next year there is NO money for books, but that isn't a big deal. the teachers can write homework problems on the board as long as they have 1 book. luckialy my school district didnt have to cut teachers YET because the new superintendent took money from everything else. we alreay have classes filling more than the maximum STATE limit, but they are being forced to cut teachers. My pe teacher has almost 50 kids in all of her classes.

I agree partially with this. We had a teacher for geography who did pretty much that, assign us readings, give us random assignments and since she was fairly clueless, we weren't sure if we were right or not until it comes time to assignments or tests. Ideally, I agree with you, have students teach themselves but still have teachers teaching.

I agree completely with this. My university allows us to use numerous databases for articles, it's great as I can find what I need without having to sift through the paper versions (although I still do read some of the paper journals also). It's a shame when I see people who are well-dressed, have the Internet yet when the going gets tough, they ask someone else for help instead of realizing that just maybe the answer is at their fingertips.
The problem with the technology though is that it is used so much for fun to go about and text, play online games endlessly, etc... . Having a small reward is one thing but when they go on their myspace, facebook, twitter and whatever the other ones are for hours yet cant seem to figure out an answer for homework by themselves, they don't always use the same resource that they've been using for hours but instead of using it for play, use it for work.
Although I have to put some blame on the teachers (which is also blaming the budget cuts). Many teachers don't make the subject interesting for the students so the students get less encouraged to take extra time for it. Although I do agree that many students are spoiled-rotten brats, they need someone to show that the subject can be fun and then there's a greater chance that more will dedicate more time and effort to it. If the school gets budget cuts, the teachers may be more strained and it's harder to teach while so stressed and worrying if you're next on the list to be cut.

I think that it is stupid and is going against the Amercan recovery or wahtever act. Then again Arnold probably isnt the smartest guy and hes a republican.
so, i mean, it doesnt make sense, i know they are strapped for cash, but I would go to sooooooo many other places before cutting education.

Arnold is not the only problem with California...let's get that straight right now. He has a State Senate that wont agree on cutting any other special interests BESIDES education, so he can only do what his stubborn senate says he can. I remember, quite clearly, that these problems were just as bad under DEMOCRATIC governor Gray Davis. He inherited a big mess from Davis.
Anyone who says that Arnold is the only one at fault is completely naive to the extreme problem California faces (particularly with illegal immigration where illegal immigrants make up 25% of our state population...and are not paying any taxes). Our states' economy is also based largely on the aerospace/defense industry, which is taking a massive hit right now and thus brining in less revenues to the state. We are also taking a huge hit right now in this whole mortgage/loan crisis...only Nevada is suffering more than we are in this regard. These three situations are largely to blame for the lack of funds coming into the state...and are not Republican/Democrat "blame game" issues, just things that have happened. It doesn't matter who our leader was, this state would still be facing a huge budget shortfall regardless. We rose so high up so quickly that the fall was likely to be very painful.
