Horny just means a state of sexual arousal. Yes, you can be horny without having an erection (example...a guy talking to friends about sex may feel horny without an erection). It is just a state of sexual arousal.

It's actually really entertaining about the origin of that use. It comes from the Egyptian god Amun, who was a fertility god and is usually depicted as having two large horns on his head. A little piece of trivia: whenever you do the bunny ears thing behind people in photos, your actually saying that they are more fertile then you. Also comes from horn=penis.

First, this is NOT a stupid question! Clarification=intellectual curiosity=a good thing!

Aside from the interesting definition of where the term 'horny' comes from, the biological reason you feel it is from the sex drive, which is controlled by a lot of things, but is triggered at puberty by testosterone. So, it's the brain's response to the testosterone in the blood that makes you 'feel' *that* way. It is entirely biological, like 'feeling' hungry when your blood sugar level drop.

Erection is caused bu the brain's response to the testosterone, but you can be 'horny' with or without one, depending on the situation. Early on in puberty, it's more of an automatic (and often very much unwanted!) thing, testoterone='horny'=erection, but as you get a bit older, you can 'feel' horny, and not have the erection, until you want it.

To me, being horny is just the feeling of wanting some sort of sexual release, like masturbating. You don't have to have a boner to be horny, but like you said, if you're horny and touch your dick it would probably spring into action.
