It is not for everyone. I find it to be very painful (I could not walk for 2 days afterwards and I used a small object)...some guys find it enjoyable and don't feel pain (even with larger objects). Disagree with Matt on this one, its not usually messy for me, not in the sense you mean. Its best to put a towell down or something though because of the lube.

Yeah, that's what I meant by messy. If you are laying down, the lube could get on your bed/whatever you're on. So yeah, as Nick said, use a towel.

the only time i try it is after a shower cus your still kinda wet so you dont need lube and even if you dont make a big deal of makin down there clean it's still generally clean

The lubricant can get messy sometimes, but that's why a lot of people do it in the shower. The cleanup is much easier. As for encountering feces (a lot of people are worried about that), that can happen, but it helps to have a bowel movement beforehand.
