School bans pupils from kissing

Chris Richardson, headmaster of Kings of Wessex School in Cheddar, Somerset, has told all 1,200 pupils that they face detention if caught 'snogging'.

However, parents at the school for 13 to 18-year-olds have criticised the rule, claiming that kissing is an integral part of teenage life.

The move follows a string of disciplinary incidents at the school, including the case of a pupil who was threatened with expulsion after being caught eating an apple on school tennis courts.

Children have also been given detention in the past for undoing shirt top buttons, taking off blazers on hot days or wearing the wrong shade of black trousers.

Complaining about the kissing ban, one parent of a pupil at the Church of England Foundation School told The Sun: "Snogging is part of teenage life.

"Most schools probably frown on pupils kissing. But actually banning it under threat of punishment is going a step too far."

Mr Richardson was unavailable to comment on the matter.

The Kings of Wessex School is also a Specialist Technology College and has received government awards for sustained improvement in exam results over recent years.

Two years ago, pupil Tom Bosley, 16, was almost expelled after refusing to accept detention for eating an apple on a tennis court, where food is banned.

In 2003, 22 children were accused of breaching the uniform code by wearing plain supermarket-bought blazers instead of more expensive ones from the school outfitters. Parents formed a protest group – branding the strictness "Dickensian".

Writing on the school's website, Mr Richardson says: "We are a forward-thinking school but we still believe in traditional values.

Bah sounds pretty similar to what my old school was like all the time.

You would get instant detentions for silly things like top button not being done up, shirt being untucked, wearing wrong shoes, wrong colour trousers, for running in corridors, for shouting in corridors, wrong colour / tatty looking uniform.

My old school was also pretty strict on things like phones and iPods, if you were caught with one it would be taken off of you on the spot and you would be put into detention. You would only get the item back after it had been held for two weeks and you had got a letter from your parent / guardian asking for it back.

In short, my old school were wankers in some respects.

Schools in Lincolnshire = more lenient than ones here in Essex imho though :P

Wow. Seriously, California is so much chiller. People at my school 3-8th grade :/ come to school like drunk or stoned or both and get off. This year, a kid in my glass got 185 detentions in the 180 days of school, and got through. My school will never hold anyone back, but they've expelled a few people.

Let me see. in my school of 200, there were at least 20 who came to school drunk or stoned, and got suspended. As for those who didn't get suspened, that would be about 60 or 70.

God, that's horrible. We aren't allowed to hug in our school, thanks to the worst principal we've ever had. There has been more petitions to get her fired then years she's been here. She replaced a great principal of ours.

lol i got in trouble for hugging a girl (a god damn hug) but they just said that this is a place for learning, not socalizating blah blah blah but still it's annoying to listen to a teacher ramble on about shit I don't care about. Our school usually didn't give out detentions but rather just tell the kissers to take it elsewhere. If they kept on kissing away on numerous occasions despite being told otherwise, then some teachers would give a detention whereas others wouldn't. The school rules I think banned it but not all the teachers enforced detentions.

If it was something more, such as sex then you'd probably get suspended or expelled.

hmm, that rule isn't suprising. at my school we have the "1 metre rule". you aren't supposed to go within a metre of someone of the opposite sex. that doesn't stop my girlfriend and i from hugging and having the odd kiss at school as long as we are careful. some teachers also enforce the rule more then others.

Our teacher doubles detentions if you dont show up. triples if he sends out his "Detention Gang" (actually 1 or 2 people who have detentions, let out so they can go find people who have to come to DT, but arent there, and then if you refuse to come with them back to DT, he triples it. Quite confusing to write it out, eh?)

Our school (Grades 7-12) has pretty much all the grade 11's and 12's making out a break. None of the teachers care though.

I've been to school pissed drunk twice. I narrowly got away with it the first time, but some kid snitched me up in PE the second time five minutes before the end of the day. Damn. I never did that again, though.

The first time, it was this scotch whiskey in a Lucozade bottle, and the second it was the last few drops of a bottle of Jack Daniels, which my year head forced me to hand over.

I'm suprised I wasn't suspended for that.

Not kissing, but making out should definitely be/remain banned. I honestly find some public displays of affection kind of disgusting. Whether it's gay or straight.

You'd get expelled just for holding hands in my school, unless making a deal, then you need papers to prove so with at least 1 witness signature who can testify about it. Worse than that, but you can swear for some reason.
