I went to the orthodontist yesterday and now my mouth feels like a body builder is ripping the teeth apart in there. Usually it doesn't hurt this bad, but currently I can't close my mouth all the way. If I do, my bottom teeth start to hurt. I can't really chew anything, because then everything starts to hurt.

I've already taken Tylenol, and a topical gel like Orajel won't help, because well, a.) That stuff doesn't do anything for me, I just end up getting it all over my tongue which makes it tingle for a while and b.) It's not like it's that kind of pain.

Rawr. Somebody grab me some pliers so I can take these things off!

Nothing is wrong, they are just super super sore because they tightened them more than usual yesterday. They're doing some crazy stuff so I can get off as soon as possible. I didn't realize that it was going to hurt this bad though!

They're sadly supposed to hurt Andy. I had to deal with braces for like a year and a half (or was it two years...I honestly don't remember. xD). They can REALLY hurt at times, and you just have to hope that the Tylenol kicks in eventually... If not, you just have to live with the pain. :/ Just think about how they'll be off eventually lol... And how you'll then have to wear a retainer throughout the day... xP

Imagine how gorgeous you'll look after its all over, Auty.

Braces do hurt, to varying degrees. But, if you're encouraging your ortho to be bold here, it might be hurting much more than it needs to. I'd encourage you to call him and let him readjust them some so their more comfortable, Autumn, and let him go a bit slower. So what if it takes a bit longer, at least you'll be in less pain.

I understand how you feel it's how I felt when I got them on... as far as eating go pudding, bannana's jello, ice cream, anything soft. Tylenol will help a little bit so don't stop taking it. Cold drink will work amazing wonders for you. Other than that you just have to let them settle in. PM me if you have any questions

Oh, I didn't encourage him to go bold...He kinda decided it on his own. It was me sitting in the chair with his fingers in my mouth "Mmhmm, now we're gonna try and move things along to get these off as soon as possible." and me "Wkdjfald ammalkdjf?" trying to talk with his fingers in my mouth! But yeah, I might mention next time I'm there that they hurt really bad this time.

Well, I don't like pudding...and it's even hard for me to chew bananas at this point. I don't like ice cream either, and I can only eat so much jello.

The pain usually goes away after a couple of days, so I'm just riding it out. You'd think after 4 and a half years I'd be used to it by now, huh?

Awwww....poor Auty! The whole thing is so humiliating, at least there's no sucking question mark, like the 'regular' dentist. Speak up for yourself, girl! Don't let him do anything without your consent.

The pain is starting to go away....If I close my mouth too tightly they hurt again though. So I just haven't been putting my teeth together when my mouth is closed...

poor, sweet Autumn........

Yeah, just ride it out. At least you can still type.

I'd offer you a brownie, but I know you don't like them. So, just for you, I made some tutti frutti jello! With and without the floaty pieces of fruit cocktail!

Its fine don't worry. I had braces for 3 years.. And believe me there were times where i was balled up in tears.. Its to be expected.

Take Tylenol Advil anything to relieve the pain. As well as get an ice pack and press it against your cheek, There isnt any inflammation however it will numb the pain a bit. Try to keep your mouth open as much as possible though it may feel weird it will help the pain recede. Try chewing gum (What your not allowed to chew gum when you have braces) I did it all the time nothing happened. It loosens your jaw and allows your teeth to move once more. Though it may hurt for a bit when your chewing gum it really does help in the long term (I even told my Ortho i was chewing gum and He was fine with it)..

I Had just taken off my braces at the end of last year. My teeth are amazingly straight.. The outcome is beautiful. And I want to get them bleached and my parents are considering..

Hope you found this helpful and Good Luck having the braces on.

I know it may be a teeny bit late now, but for future reference, soup is such an awesome 'braces food' because you can get so many different kinds of it, and it's easy to swallow, fills you up, etc. Just thought I'd suggest it, as when I first got braces, I pretty much just ate soup.

You're never too late Rex! Thanks.

And as for the poster above Rex, I don't feel like scrolling back up and looking at the name, thanks too. :) I chew gum, although I don't tell my orthodontist, he wouldn't be too happy. I didn't realize that gum would help the pain. But this time, even chewing gum would make it hurt.

This time, even though I wasn't able to eat a lot of food that I normally do (As in apples, I eat probably at least 1 every day...or anything else than involved chewing really) I drank a lot of smoothies and different fruit juices. I have a book that I got for my birthday that has so many recipes that I haven't tried yet, so I saw this as an opportunity to try some of those out. :)

Tylenol is crap. For some reason it never works for me. Get some Aleve or ibuprofen and take that instead.

I haven't talked to my ortho yet, I have an appointment soon....ish. I was planning on telling him then. The pain is gone now, they are just a little sore in the morning, but thats because I probably grind my teeth or something.

I haven't read all the posts so if I repeat useless Info I do apologize.

Pain in your mouth is one of the worst pains I think can be experiences physically. I believe that the dull ache that never stops has the potential to drive some insane. I had a whitening thing done on my teeth that involved exposing my teeth to strong UV rays for forty five minutes. I couldn't sleep that night and had to have my father get a prescription of Codeine in order to numb the pain but it really didn't work.

The best thing for pain in your teeth is trying to go to sleep or doing something that makes you forget it. If you aren't sensitive in your mouth, drink something really cold to help numb it. Also if it's still hurting, find a release! Find situation where you can yell and exhaust that need to scream or react aggressively. The dull pain can really bring that out in people, the need to be aggressive about something. I think it goes back to some survival instinct. keep on your pain killers, overlapping by about five or ten minutes can help, but make sure you aren't overdosing or going over the recommended daily intake. Avoid just sitting and focusing on it. Good luck to you, I honestly hope the pain stops for you soon.
